Botticelli, July 2011

I know it’s Shakespeare, I know I’ve seen the play this is from, and presumably it’s from a comedy… but I don’t know the speaker. And there are just too many possible “B’s” (Benedick? Beatrice? Sir Toby Belch? Nick Bottom?) to hazard a good guess.

Take a DQ.

It was indeed Sir Toby Belch. Honour forbids…

(By the way, have you competed yet in the Shakespearean Feud?)

IQ: Did you improvise a brilliant tale about being the Man from the Moon to allow your friends’ wedding to be completed?

IQ: Were you a lawman who turned to sportswriting?

No idea- THIS time, take your DQ with honor (I shouldn’t get credit for a bunch of guesses, though)

No, I’m not Bat Masterson.

IQ: Did you end up facing the whole Bolivian army when your last job went south?

IQ: Did a young Helen Mirren once play your moll?

In Rostand’s play, Cyrano de Bergerac is standing guard while Roxanne and Christian are being married. He spots the approach of De Guiche and improvises a wild tale about having fallen from the moon to delay him until the ceremony is complete. The real-life Cyrano, in fact, wrote a story about the Man in the Moon.

DQ: Were you born in the twentieth century?

IQ: Are you jester to the court of Id?

Yes.

  1. Real person
  2. Male
  3. First name starts with “B”
  4. Dead
  5. Born in the 20th century

No, I’m not Butch Cassidy.

No, I’m not the drunken Bung.

Don’t know this one- ask a DQ.

IQ: Are you a Cuban-born classical guitarist who is still an active performer in the forefront of your field?

IQ: Were you an American Indian who served in the U.S. Senate?

No clue on this one- ask a DQ.

No, I’m not Ben Nighthorse Campbell.

IQ: Did you create a graveyard smash?

Not Bobby “Boris” Pickett

So you’re not Manuel Barrueco? Consider this a whole-hearted recommendation - he is up there with Andre Segovia and John Williams as an absolute master of the instrument. He records with EMI Angel records, tours extensively and teaches at Peabody in the US. I got to meet him last year after his Toronto concert at the Glenn Gould Studio, and I thanked him for more than 20 years of inspiration.

Anyway…

DQ: Are you renowned for your athletic accomplishments?
