You’re probably thinking of Original D&D, the three-booklet set. Basic would have been the boxed set, I think, where the rulebook was in a larger format and had a blue-colored cover. (Tactical Studies Rules, Inc. created it, and the first version (1977) was credited to J. Eric Holmes.)
