Then Douglas Adams had a change of heart, deciding that ending was too bleak and the result of having a bad year. In the subsequent BBC radio adaptation, the ending was changed and a Babelfish teleported the main characters to safety just before Earth’s destruction. (Adams had already passed away by then)
