“Family name,” not last name, begins with J. Anybody know anything about the Korean film industry?
There’s still Israel and the Middle East as part of Asia to consider. Korea looks like a better bet though.
Israeli was actually my first thought, but divemaster’s mention of his “carefully worded answer to DQ4” made me think Korean.
I can’t think of any actress who fits these clues, Korean or otherwise.
I’m not keeping track of y’all’s DQs, so I’m not sure who may have ones left. You are one DQ away from leading you right to her, regardless of whether you’ve ever heard of her before or not. And this “magic DQ” is staring you right in the face.
I got nothin’. I pass.
Pass.
So now what? I give out the answer?
It’s been 24 hours, so answer away.
Please do.
Don’t forget to start a new thread for the new game.
Well, y’all sussed out it was (likely) a Korean actress, which is correct. There’s a common question I’ve seen asked for every game since I jumped in:
So I figured someone would ask whether she had won awards for her work, perhaps even asking about the main place where international films and actors/actresses get recognized: Cannes.
And only one Korean actress has ever won at Cannes. So since she is the only Korean to have ever won such an award, a DQ along the lines of “Did you win an award at Cannes?” would give only one correct answer and point you directly to her.
The answer is
Do-yeon Jeon, or, in the Korean way: JEON Do-yeon
Ms. Jeon won Best Actress at Cannes in 2007, and currently sits on the Cannes competition panel.
Do-yeon Jeon is arguably the most famous actress in Korea, or at least the most accomplished and respected for her work. The best U.S. comparison would be a combination of Meryl Streep (for acting chops) and Scarlett Johansson (for star power).
I’ve seen most of her movies and she is, in my opinion, the best actress of the past 15 years, hands down, regardless of nationality. She plays a wide variety of roles and shines in all of them. Her work in Secret Sunshine (which got her the above-mentioned award) is simply stunning. There is one scene (if you’ve seen the movie you will immediately know the scene I’m talking about), that when you watch it will have you thinking “my God; that is perfection personified.” And the most effective part of the scene she doesn’t even say anything–it’s all carried by her expressions.
Anyway, I’ll be at the beach all day tomorrow, so I’ll start a new game tomorrow night or Monday morning.
I have no doubt she is a fine actress, but I can’t say I’ve ever heard of her.
Ditto.
Likewise, nor the movie Secret Sunshine.
I’m not too much of a movie auteur. The last movie I saw was Dr. Strange.
Last movie I saw was Moana, in Nov 2016. Last one before that was The Martian, in Oct 2015.
Your play, I believe, EH…
Hmm. Let’s give it another day, and if no one else has heard of Ms. Jeon, I’ll start a new Botticelli thread for June.
You, the Prof, KO, and I were the only guessers this round, and we’ve all said we’ve never heard of her.
divemaster, one of the rules we play by (as is now obvious) is that at least one of the other participants has to have heard of him or her. If not, the previous host goes again. I’ve had a few rounds where I was certain someone would know the person (Charles Williams and Edith Hamilton come to mind), but Nope. Don’t let it keep you from playing.
Same here, nobody knew who Myles Garrett was, even though I thought he had been all over the news.
