Trying to think of classic Westerns from the 1963-75 period. I’m coming up with For A Few Dollars More, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, and “Once Upon a Time in the West”. But all I know about those movies is that they exist, I couldn’t tell you who was in them. Some of them were probably made by Italian Sergio Leone. I’m thinking it may not be a well known film, because despite my minimal knowledge of the era, I think a major Western with a female protagonist would be well known just for being unique.
Wasn’t there some movie where John Wayne was escorting a cute little girl across the desert or something?
Didn’t John Wayne have a few in there? True Grit, I think was one of them?
That one has a female protagonist. Hmmm… now I’m trying to remember what name Hailee Steinfeld was called in the remake.
True Grit? Her name was Maddie.
A Big Hand for the Little Lady, The Man Who Loved Cat Dancing, Cat Ballou, The Cheyenne Social Club… none have female leads whose name begins with H.
OK, my official guess is:
Helena Buckett, the spunky schoolmarm who shows Clint Eastwood which toads to suck in Really, Really High Plains Drifter.
That’s a truly lovely guess.
All I’ve come up with is Hallie from The Electric Horseman, which has the problem of having come out around 1978-1980, and so isn’t the answer.
This might be a little girl character. I don’t know.
Oh. Maybe Hannie Caulder from the movie of the same name? With Raquel Welch in the title role.
I didn’t pay a lot of attention to westerns back in the day, but I did pay attention to Raquel.
To be official, DQ: Are you Hannie Caulder?
Yes! I am indeed vengeful gunslinger (so to speak) Hannie Caulder.
