Bowing to the whim of anonymous online people: should Kat cut her hair?

Cut it at least a foot, the ends look thin (although it looks to be in good shape). If you cut it, it will still be long but it will look much healthier and fuller with a nice blunt cut.

Kat, if you hair has really stopped growing, it probably looks thin on the ends like Sattua’s. If that’s the case, you should definitely cut it for the reasons above. All to often I see women who cling to their long hair even when it’s ceased to be flattering because they haven’t cared for it properly. Long hair is fine as long as you still get regular trims and don’t hang onto ratty ends just for the sake of having long hair.

This answer cannot be given without a picture.

That is the final verdict. Get us pics and we’ll impart our collective wisdom.
I’m partial to long hair, but I can see the beauty in short hair (just to get my bias out there and in the open)

I think you should definitely cut it. Hair that long is unwieldly and if you wear it back most fo the time what’s the point really? Make sure you leave it long enough to put back and I bet you’ll love it, it will dry faster and you can do more with it…

My hair was past my butt, and I have now got it up to my ears. I did this a little at a time. I do miss my lomg hair but over all I am so happy with it short. Less shampoo, less drying time, less up keep, and I look my age now!

Don’t do anything drastic at first, let yourself get adjusted with a shorter length before going any shorter. Or chop it all off… it’s your hair.

Agreed. And if you cut at least 10", gather it in a ponytail before cutting it off and send the ponytail to Locks of Love. Your hair can always grow back – these kids’ won’t.

I had worn my hair long for most of my life. My husband also had “80’s rock star” length hair (yes, he sat on it). He cut his about 7 years ago. Lovely change for him. He was absolutely against the idea of me cutting mine off. I’ve done it 4 times in the last 10 years. I cut it, let it grow for a while, and then cut it off again.

In September of 2005, I realized that taking care of hubby after his car accident left very little time for hair, so I went to my wonderful stylist, and without warning, said “hack it off. all of it”. So it was short. And sassy. And pretty freakin’ cute. Hubby hated it. Fast forward to April, '06. Time for a trim. I see the stylist and say “DO NOT give me MomHair”. She gave me RockStar Hair! It’s much shorter than I’ve worn since high school. Just about every man I encounter regularly has said emphatically “your hair looks great!” and added that they would freak out if their wives did the same thing. Three of the doctors where I work will compliment it about once a week. Which is really strange because, you know…the doctors really shouldn’t comment on the appearance of the women in the office. But they are being nice and not in the least inappropriate. Oh, and short hair hating hubby? He mentioned this week that it’s getting a little out of control and I’d better schedule a trim!

If you’re getting the itch to cut it off, I say do it! I don’t even instruct Angie, I just tell her to have fun, because… it’s only hair. I can make more.

While impossible to answer without knowing how long is long, I’d say that women with good bone structure look better with their hair in a pony tail.

OK, almost any woman looks better in a pony tail. Just as long as it’s not stuck though the back of a baseball cap.

While we’re waiting for Kat to provide us with a picture so we can give her our opinions, I just want to say I love a woman in a baseball cap! I’ve never seen an attractive woman look bad in a baseball cap, and the ponytail through the back is seriously hot.

Well, sorry to have not replied yet, but the board was defective on Friday when I was online, and then I went out of town on Friday night through tonight to visit my sister and then my brother.

I don’t currently have any pictures of myself to show, but I’ll see if I can get my sister to email me the pic she just took of me with new niece.

I have nothing to add except that this is absolutely true.

As others said, we really can’t give an answer without seeing a picture of you. Some women look fantastic with short hair, and some just look OK, but would look better w/ long.

I LOVE short hair, and I look better with short hair. This isn’t just a personal opinion. Even my fiance agrees. I’m chopping my hair off as soon as I can get an appt. w/ my stylist, and I’m pretty sure the relationship isn’t going to “cool” because of it. I also get hit on quite a lot more when my hair is short.

And I agree with BoringDad about ponytail-thru-baseball cap. I think it’s a horrid look.

Back when we started dating, **Dangerosa **was growing out her hair. I think she looks better with short hair, but she wanted to grow it out, so I said nothing.

She hated it. It was hard to style, she had to dink with it all the time, etc. etc. After we’d been living together maybe a year, she had finally had it. So she went and got it cut very short. I’m sure there’s a name for the style, but as a Guy ™, I have no idea what it is.

She asked me what I thought, and I said “I like it. I like you better with short hair.” She was pissed that I had not mentioned so before. I thought I was doing the right thing by remaining silent while she was growing it out.

The point of this story? I have learned not to remain silent. Depending on the shape of your face and how your hair looks, short may be much better than long.

No, no body parts fell off. My life didn’t drastically change. Traumatized? Only in that I kept putting 3 times to much shampoo in my hair, and kept scraping my brush across the back of my neck because I was so used to having to pull so hard to brush my hair out.

Did I keep my hair? Nope. We packaged it up and sent it off to Locks of Love.

Good on you!! My hair was never long enough to do that, but I sure admire those that can and do. It was long enough that I’m hip to the brush scraping the back of my neck, but even beter, when I got it cut really short one time, lots of people took the liberty of feeling the back of it. Yum.

I’ve never understood why women put so much effort into makeup when a good haircut stands out. Unfortunately, you can’t just pick a hair cut out of a magazine unless the person has your facial features.

To me, hair length is meaningless. There are optimal haircuts (plural) for everyone and when you find one or two that work then you’re leagues ahead of the game. Some people go through life with one crappy haircut after another.

There was a list of “Rules That Men Wish Women Knew” (or some similar title) going around a while back. (I think it was in response to that “Women’s Rules for Men” list, which had rules like, “If you don’t know, I’m not going to tell you.”) One of these “rules” was:

“Don’t cut your hair. Ever. The reason men are so reluctant to get married is the fact that every woman they know who gets married immediately hacks all her hair off.”

Well, as long as you’re soliciting anonymous whims, I say keep it. But then, I adore long hair on women as long as it’s well-kept (trimmed at appropriate times, etc.) I’m in the “Don’t cut your hair – ever” camp.

Mind you, I realize short hair can be very attractive, and is most certainly easier to take care of. But given a choice, my vote will always be for long hair.

Of course, estremely short hair - like a “pixie” cut - can look good on some women. Like, a pixie-sized woman. Petite. And if your nose is even a little bit big, stay away from the pixie cut. It will just make your nose look bigger.

And if you’re Major Kira Nerys, the short hair is good. Much better than that ridiculous hairstyle from the pilot episode.

Like most men, seemingly, I prefer long hair on women and dislike the urge that seems to come over women that they have to cut it after reaching a certain age. Why can’t a forty-year-old woman look mature with middle-of-the-back length hair, assuming of course she wants to wear it that way? If people want to wear it short than more power to them, but I think it’s too bad when it’s done to meet a perceived expectation of the culture, like the idea that a mom needs a “Mom” cut.

I always wonder why men are so partial to long hair on women, and the best theory I can come up with is it makes us feel young ourselves!

Having said that, I recognize that some facial types do look better in short hair, so like the others I join the chorus: Bring on the pictures!

Among celebrities, I think Jodie Foster is an outstanding example of a woman who looks better in short hair. With long hair as in her early movies she looks skinny and lantern-jawed, whereas short hair improves her looks 100%.
