Box vs. Soft Pack - There's a difference?

A coworker came up to me today with a flap from an advertisment for Marlboro. We are both perplexed by something on it.

It lists the tar and nicotine levels for all of it’s products. They are as follows:

From the above, I surmise that different cigarettes have different tar and nicotine levels. Okay, makes sense. Except for the designations above of “Box” and “Soft-pack,” which doesn’t.

Why does a cigarette suddenly become different because of the way it is packaged? Does this happen for other items, such as food? Does, say, Coke have different nutritional information in a bottle than in a can? What accounts for these differences?

is there a difference in the size?

maybe it means if you just rip the bottom off the box and light them all up!!

Different sizes, different formulations, different percentages, that’s why.

It’s easier for the company to just make one label and slap it on all packs. (Not that most people read 'em anyway.)

Back when my entire family smoked, we had serious discussions about this issue. There are those people that swear “soft pack” cigs taste better than boxed, and vice versa.

It’s all a matter of personal taste. . . and lifestyle: when I was a smoker I preferred boxes to soft packs, because I was always turning soft packs into “English Ovals.” (Old joke there.)

PS Nearly everybody in my family has quit smoking, so now we don’t care.

Satan I was going to post a really good answer to your post but after reading that stuff I got dizzy and forgot what I was going to say…

Well, yeah, some of them are different sizes. However, some of them are not any different, or shouldn’t be. Like 100’s has a box and soft pack designation. I smoke that, and I always thought they were the same - flavor, size, type, etc.

And I remember comparing the filters on soft pack v. box smokes and the box filters were invariably shorter. 'Samatter of fact, I’m comparing right now, and see that they still are (at least on this particular brand).

That might have something to do with it, too.

From my convenience store days, I thought that soft pack cigarettes were 85 mm, and box cigarettes were 80 mm.
I forget how long Camels and Lucky Strikes were.

I used to put softs in a used box if the store was out of box. If the softs were 5mm longer this may not have worked. Could still allow for a shorter filter though. FTR that was Marlboro I was smoking at the time. I’ve quit for 3+ mos now

Man, out of context, this post looks REAL weird.
