Boxing Judges: How Do I Become One?

Something that has always been a question in my mind the handful of times I’ve watched boxing on TV is: Who are these judges, and how do I become one? Who selects boxing judges? Also, what do the judges usually have as day jobs?

In most states, at least in California, you have to have a license to judge professional bouts. And to get licensed you have to have experience. There are official training classes and presumably you can also pick up experience by judging amateur bouts.

But like any other officiating job, you start at the bottom and if everything goes right, you get a nice seat ringside at the big fight in Vegas and the chance to get a healthy bribe from Don King.

From what I’ve seen the requirements seem to be blindness, drunkness, and a thorough unfamiliarity with the fundamentals of the sport.
