Boxing Trainer Emanuel Steward has died at 68

Story. Apparently he’s been hospitalized since last month with stomach cancer.

I couldn’t believe it when I heard the news. What a legend in the sport. Hearns, Lennox, Wladimir, Holyfield, Chavez, De la Hoya. He had a bigger role in some of those fighters than others. But one of the best trainers of the modern era. Huge loss for the sport.

I can’t really imagine Wladimir fighting without Manny?

Boxing will never be the same. He made the difference between success and spectacular success in the ring for so many boxers. This is the end of an era.

Steward may have been the number two trainer of the era to Angelo Dundee. Their careers overlapped but Dundee had the first half and Steward may have had the second half of the era. What he did with Hearns was masterful. Tommy was great.

68 is young these days. He cared about his fighters. RIP. I don’t think that since Don King ruined the sport of boxing there are any more like him out there. Tell me if I’m wrong.

Yeah, in a sport that has its share of bad guys, he was truly one of the good guys.
