The “Shatnerverse” novels (written by William Shatner with a lot of heavy lifting courtesy of Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens) actually incorporate the “V’ger is the Borg” theory. “The Return” specifically has Kirk going back to V’Ger to throw a big switch and destroy the Borg.
Star Trek (2009) did incorporate some of this in the comics. Nero’s mining ship is enhanced with Borg tech and he visits V’ger at one point to get some intel on Spock.
He had Borg tech and red matter and he still needed to get “access codes” (or whatever) from Pike?
“Hmm, my aircraft carrier has been tossed backward in time 75 years and I really feel like giving those Japanese what-for. I better learn some Japanese passwords in case my awesomely ridiculously awesome technical advantage doesn’t prove quite as awesomely ridiculously awesome enough and I only win in 30 seconds instead of an awesomely ridiculously awesome 27 seconds.”
I thought the 2009 Trek movie was pretty good but not great. A decent action movie with a likable cast. I will consider seeing the new one if friends ask me to go see it.
I am not a big fan of TOS at all (too dated for me when I’ve tried to watch it and the movies), but love TNG and VOY.
Except you’re wrong - as far as I can see, the only people who *didn’t *like the movie were Star Trek fans. The filmmakers may have made some mistakes, but pandering to the Trekkies wasn’t one of them.
I certainly enjoyed it, and I’m a big Trek fan. But I evaluated the movie the same way I evaluate every movie I watch, by one simple criterion:
“Did it entertain me?”
That’s it. Plot holes? Less-than-perfect CGI? Continuity errors? I don’t care. If I leave the theater not regretting my decision to buy a ticket, I’m satisfied.
Heck, I could plausibly be called a Trek fan, but my reasons for disliking the movie have nothing to do with any past viewing habits. The plot elements I disliked could easily have been in a non-Trek film, and that film would be, in my opinion, just as bad.
On a story level, I hated the “reboot.” It had plot holes big enough to fly a Borg Cube through, without even slowing to Impulse.
On an acting level, I loved it. The main three (Pine/Kirk, Quinto/Spock, Urban/McCoy) just nailed their characters, and the “other four” (Saldana/Uhura, Cho/Sulu, Pegg/Scott, Yelchin/Chekov) were also very strong.
The pacing was good, the effects gorgeous, and finally, the Big-E does beam-spam the way it’s supposed to be done! Match that, Iron Man!
I don’t know from handsome, I seem to be going through a period when I prefer red-headed women, and I know his natural hair color is red, but his looks don’t really work as a ginger. Dark hair works better with the planes of his face, though the black shoe polish he wears in Sherlock is too fake.
