Boycott Star Trek 2

I guess I sorta am boycotting Star Trek 2. Not because I hated the first one, as it was okay, but because I don’t like where the press seems to be indicating that this one is going. And for once I’m not going to go see it to see if my suspicions are true.

To put it simply, I don’t want the new 2 to be a Khan movie. Khan was never actually a threat to anyone but Kirk. He’s not some supervillain who would have successfully taken over the Federation or anything.

And, frankly, there’s no way to watch Khan in a new movie without comparing it to the old one, and there’s just no way it can measure up. Assuming it really is Khan, I am boycotting the movie because that was a dumb, dumb decision. It’s just pandering to get people to watch rather than an attempt at good story telling. It just reeks of someone in marketing saying “People thought The Wrath of Khan was the best Star Trek movie, so let’s do that one again.”

You seem to have gotten what the press has been indicating about this movie completely wrong. Also, you have not read the rest of the thread which could have clued you in that you had gotten what the press has been saying completely wrong.

The Khan rumors were debunked quite some time ago.

In fact, the only clue to the villain in this movie is that he seems to be a Federation agent, not an enemy. He may genetically enhanced, but they’ve had that issue pop up more than once.

I don’t think it’s Khan.

From IMDB’s site, the “tagline” starts: “After the crew of the Enterprise find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt <snip>”

Khan was never “within” Starfleet.

Edit: I assume that IMDB’s tagline’s come from the official studio descriptions. Is that correct?

What, Marla McGivers doesn’t count?

Do you think Cumberbatch was cast as Lt. McGivers? :dubious:

It’s definitely not Khan. His name is given as “John Harrison” in the most recent trailer. You can see his name on the screen when Kirk is staring at the datapad.

jooooohhhnnnnn!

Also, this movie looks amazing to me. I’m definitely seeing it.

yep -

Gonna crack my knuckles and jump for joy
Got a clean bill of health from Dr. McCoy

Space hippies…

I hate space hippies.

–herbert–

That episode may be a turkey, but at least it’s a FUNNY turkey. All I can think of when I hear that one guy singing and rhyming is Dick Shawn’s LSD character in the original Producers. I don’t know which was funnier–LSD because he was supposed to be, or the space hippies because they WEREN’T.

But you know, I’ve had a funny thought about that ep. You know how TOS episodes were often written to reflect current events? Well…this episode was written BEFORE the Manson murders. If there had been a hypothetical fourth season and this had come along afterward, we might have seen a very different portrayal of a charismatic but dangerous leader with lost youth under his spell.

No, I think possibly you didn’t get the joke.

Bravo.

I think it’s more than a possibility… :frowning:

In case you didn’t, in the episode “Space Seed,” Lt. Marla McGivers, a Starfleet historian, became infatuated with Khan and helped him to take over the Enterpise. Afterwards, she chose to join him in exile rather than be court-martialed and Khan took her as his wife. Therefore, Khan was “within Starfleet.”

Technically, at least in modern US military terms, Khan would be a [her] dependent, not a member of Starfleet.

Do you think Keiko considered herself “in” Starfleet? (Married to O’brien in DS9, contracted as a teacher on the station.)

:smack: "IN’ starfleet, as in… “in her hoohah”. Gads, am I slow, or what??
