Besides, America needs all the Goddess images we can get. Just because the current French government is being a cowardly, ungrateful little snot doesn’t mean I’m going to start hating all things French. I still have a special chub for Bridget Bardot. I don’t hate all French just because some of them eat horse. (shudder) Just because some of them were Nazi bitch collaborators doesn’t take any of the honor of those who fought and died in La Resistance.
Also, can any American forget the debt we all owe Jean Lafayette?
Lissa: "Please provide a link. This really sounds like a parody, especially the line about using tax returns to buy SUVs.
"
I think you are right, Lissa although GWB, I’m fairly certain, actually said the “Democracy is a beautiful thing,” which is why when I googled the phrase I came up with a lot of links and took this one because it looked the most complete, and, admittedly, I wasn’t paying serious attention to this thread. I don’t remember the source: definitely not the government and probably a source of indep. media which may well have been in the midst of a satire. (Pretty funny, though?)
Apologies for having posted it without the link and without reading more carefully. My bad.
I will track down the link later today, but when I have access to a different computer (b/c it will then be easy to see which links I clicked on).
I’d just like to point out that Frankfurters were not changed to hot dogs in WWII. Or WWI. They have been called that for over a hundred years now and started as a nickname for them at Yale. Nothing to do with not liking Germans.
Yeesh. I can’t believe it took so long for someone to point that out. The SDMB is slipping.
I strongly disagree with the French on their position also.
I heard something else similar to the Statue of Liberty story also. I am not sure how much truth there is to it though.
Apparently a congresswoman is demanding all 75,000 American servicemen buried in France be dug up and bought home! It is called the “Bring home our dead” bill.
Congresswoman Ginny Brown-Waite says, “The remains of our brave servicemen should be buried in patriotic soil, not in a country that has turned its back on the US and on the memory of Americans who fought and died there.”
This is the only link I could find on it.

Well, the Bush Administration is planning to give tax breaks for folks who buy large SUVs – especially those over 6,000 lbs. So it’s not entirely parody…
Okay, here is what Bush actually said, articulated in a fully Bushean syntax no less but minus whatever this site decided to edit out after the ellipsis.
“Democracy is a beautiful thing, and that people are allowed to express their opinion. I welcome people’s right to say what they believe. Secondly, evidently some of the world don’t view Saddam Hussein as a risk to peace? you know, size of protest, it’s like deciding, well, I’m going to decide policy based upon a focus group.”
And here is the pretty funny parody from which I inadvertently posted.
(If you’re wondering how I could have missed the broad humor, I had clicked on a couple of links to abbreviated versions first and in each case I was just using the “find” function to go right to the word “Democracy.” Hence, this just looked like the full quotation at last, and I didn’t realize I’d clipped something from the midst of a parody in progress! I will remember in future not to clip from the 'net when I’m posting in a hurry. Thanks for catching my error Lissa)
We should boycott the statue of liberty, because, after all, it enshrines liberalism.
