I think Cruise is a nutjob but why should I care? It’s not like I’m going to get scientology cooties by watching one of his movies.
“Did you know now that Ritalin is a street drug? Do you understand that?
[…] Here’s the problem: You don’t know the history of psychiatry. I do.”
OMG this is hilarious. He comes across as a crazy nutbag from a religious cult. The type that tells people to avoid doctors because god will heal them.
Vanilla Sky is the only movie I’ve seen with Tom Cruise that I liked, but I wouldn’t boycott an actor/actress based on their views or opinions. Their personal lives have nothing to do with their acting roles.
You are, however, supporting them and their fucked-up agenda.
He was probably always a nutjob, but I used to enjoy his movies because he hadn’t ran his mouth all over the place to the point where I can’t see him as a character anymore. Now that he has, he’s lost his appeal entirely because he snaps me out of the movie.
Does that mean I have to stop watching Kevin Smith movies because he’s a Catholic? I mean those people practice ritualized cannibalism. How fucked up is that?
Why should I care what silly superstitions other people have? I just want to pay my dollar and be entertained.
How interesting to see this thread since I have already, independently come to the conclusion that I am boycotting Tom Cruise (I hadn’t heard or read any mention of this from anyone else) after seeing the trailer for his latest film where he is going to portray… a German officer of the SS. All I could think was “TOM CRUISE? REALLY?” as I squirmed in my seat in horror and embarrassment for mankind.
I’ve never particularly enjoyed his movies. I really can’t stand to watch him on screen, and he’s really, really not the hunk that he’s made out to be. The crazy is just the icing on the cake.
It’s not about their silly superstitions - it’s about funding an organisation which has committed serious crimes in the past, and actively works to suppress free speech.
But he has hurt people through this cult that he is very involved in and supports.

I don’t go to Tom Cruise movies because I don’t want to give him money and I can’t watch him perform without seeing “Tom Cruise”. Even in Tropic Thunder I thought, “there’s Tom Cruise trying really hard not to be Tom Cruise.” So that takes me out of the movie, which means to me that he is not a good actor. He can perform well, but he’s not a good actor.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Good one.
I personally don’t like to watch movies made by Jews.
Way to limit your options. The Left behind series is probably all you can watch.
I liked Collateral and Mission impossible 3 (Best in the series) and i don’t really care what kind of nut job Tom Cruise is. Besides, people who take medical advice from Tom Cruise are the kind of people who lick electrical outlets anyway, so no big loss.
That pretty much sums it up for me, too.
Similarly, it’s why I don’t go to movies starring Jack Black; he only knows how to play one character - *himself *- and I’ve already reached my Lifetime Exposure Limit to Jack Black.
The problem isn’t so much that he himself is a wacko (which is true), but that money that goes to him will make its way to the Scientology coffers. From what I have read, I contend that it is a cult that unethically lures people in, stands for abhorrent positions, commits serious criminal acts, and ruins lives. There have been other Scientology threads so I don’t think we need to get bogged down in the specifics here, but simply put: money that goes to Tom Cruise makes the world a worse place, and therefor I cannot in good conscience support him.
I do not avoid all Scientologist productions because I consider most members to be victims of that organization rather than perpetrators. I will hold the more prominent and outspoken members accountable, though.
Von Stauffenberg was not an SS officer. He was a German count following his family tradition as a soldier . He was in the Wehrmacht (German army) from 1926. There was constant friction between Hitler and the entrenched German aristocracy that ran the military. One of the reasons why he started the Waffen SS and favored them.
And I don’t give a damn what people do in their private life. If it is a good movie I’ll watch. I have enjoyed quite a few of his movies. Although I have to admit his private nuttiness is starting to intrude on my enjoyment.
Silent births with no pain killers:smack: I’d like to shove a parmagranite up his ass in honor of his fruity behavior.
Look, I think the man’s crazy and I don’t care for his off-screen persona… but he consistently works with good directors in interesting movies, and it 20-odd years, I can’t remember not enjoying a performance of his. So no, I won’t watch a film merely because he’s in it, but I refuse to avoid a film I want to see for the same reason.
Besides, both Stephen Spielberg and Cameron Crowe were both willing to work with him more than once, so he can’t be *all *bad.
I don’t really care about his off screen life. Many actors/singers are crazy (at least to me.)
As to the Scientology part, there are some good actors that are Scientologistsand I sure has hell won’t use that for a reason.
Jason Lee and Ethan Suplee both come to mind from “My Name is Earl” and many Kevin Smith movies. John Travolta is another one. I actually consider him being in a movie (from Pulp Fiction on) to be a plus.
My problem with Tom Cruise is that over the last 15 years I have been extremely disappointed in his movies. He is nearly a one note actor and that one note worked best way back when in “Risky Business” or maybe the first time I saw “Top Gun”. I made the mistake of seeing “War of the Worlds” despite not liking Cruise as I love the story and usually enjoy Steven Spielberg films. This movie was painfully bad and it was his acting (and Dakota Fanning’s) that ruined it. If Steven had hired some good actors the movie might have worked.
So my boycotting of Tom Cruise (& Keanu Reeves) is simply to avoid paying to see a movie I really dislike in the movies.
That is, of course, your choice to make. But as others have said more eloquently than I can, money you pay for his movies goes to him, which eventually make it into the coffers of the Scientology machine, and I refuse to support them even indirectly.
