I’d think “male,” but I’d also think “bad names.”
Either (WKRP vs Party of Five)
Boy (isn’t there a girl’s version of this? Some woman on a reality show)
um…City (the only time I’ve ever heard this one was in an X-Files episode)

Girl or Horse
Boy (the girl’s name has an “e” not an “i”)
Boy (the girl’s name has an “ey” not an “ie”)
Boy (the girl’s name has two Bs)

I will always think of Tristan as a male name, thanks to James Herriott (though I think it would have rather “wimpy” overtones these days).
Bailey would be a good name for a beagle.

What about Kelly? Or Ashley?
Bailey: Dog
Tristan: Boy
Aubrey: Boy
Morgan: Either
Francis: Male (Female would be Frances)
Leslie: Female, with small possibility of male with unkind parents. (The “official” female spelling may be Lesley, but I’ve known many many female Leslies, so I consider that spelling gender neutral.)
Robin: Female, with small possibility of male.
Jordan: Either
Tasman: Ian devil.
Keegan: Surname.
Kelly: Female with possibility of male.
Ashley: If younger than 25, female. Between 25 and 40: female with possibility of male. Older than 40: Male with mother with Gone with the Wind obsession.
It’s a romance hero name, all right, but with a rather more impressive pedigree: it’s drawn from Arthurian legend.
This whole thread reminds me of the Great Blaise Zabini Controversy in some circles of Harry Potter fandom…
Good call, Green Bean. I know one male Ashley who is about fifteen years old, and numerous female Ashleys. Numerous female Kellys, and one male, about forty, though I have heard of others.
I wanted to ask because those names are mine and my sister’s. We’re both in our twenties. I didn’t know that Kelly was applicable to males until I was twenty years old.
Bailey: Girl. My ex-girlfriend’s surname. No, it was not her first name as well.
Tristan: Boy. I’ve never met one, though I used to work with a girl named Tristen.
Aubrey: Girl. To hell with tradition; it sounds doofy if used as a boy’s name, IMHO.
Morgan: Surname. Used as a girl’s name by people who’ve watched too many Old Navy commercials.
Francis: Boy. I’ve known a few, but the only one I’ve ever met who didn’t go by “Frank” is my 68-year-old uncle.
Leslie: Girl. I’ve never known a guy with this first name. Of course, on a significant part of my father’s side of the family, that would just be goofy; I leave it to you to determine why. I’ve met two female Leslies and one Lesley. Also one Lezley, but that doesn’t count.
Robin: Both. It’s one of the few names that doesn’t sound odd (to me) for either gender, and I’ve known two males and one female (as well as one Robyn).
Jordan: Boy.
I’ve never heard of Tasman being used as a name for anything other than an island chain.
Keegan: Girl, I suppose, though I don’t know why you’d want to use it. Sounds like a surname, though I’ve never heard it in that capacity either.
Kelly: Girl. See ‘Aubrey’.
Ashley: Girl. See ‘Kelly’. Special exemption is made for males with a striking resemblance to Bruce Campbell, because that would be kinda cool.
Bailey - a surname
Tristan - male (q.v. Sir Tristan, Tristan Farnon)
Aubrey - Aubrey - male
Morgan - male (q.v. Morgan Freeman) but more often a surname
Francis - male (q.v. Sir Francis Drake)
Leslie - male, female is Lesley (q.v. Lesley Judd from Blue Peter)
Robin - male (q.v. Robin Hood)
Jordan - big tits!

Folks, don’t name your children “Bailey.”
Bailey- surname, or a girl
Tristan- it’s a boy’s name? The only Tristan I ever knew was female
Aubrey- could be a boy that gets beat up a lot. I have a niece named Audrey, so I’m going with girl.
Morgan- either. Most Morgans I see are female.
Francis- male.
Leslie- female. I didn’t even know it was a male name until I saw GWTW (how ironic his character name was Ashley!)
Robin- female. I had one male student with this name, but he wanted to be called Chris (his middle name)
Jordan- either.
Keegan-male. We had one at our school.
Kelly-female, although they used to have a male Kelly on As The World Turns about 20-25 years ago, and in my prepubescent mind he was HOT!
Ashley-female. See above.
1.) either
2.) boy
3.) either
Or they’d be good as dog’s names…
Exactly what I thought of when I read the OP.
That’s the only time I’ve ever heard that name, so it will forever be a female name to me…
Heh. I’ve heard of/known other Tristans (all male), but All Creatures Great And Small still comes to mind whenever I hear that name.
In preview I saw the first three names run together as Bailey Tristan Aubrey, and I thought [comic book guy]Worst. Name. Ever![/comic book guy]
Bailey- Surname, or boy’s name. Or an alcoholic drink. Any way you look at it, it’s a crappy name for a person.
Tristan- boy’s name
Aubrey- boy’s name
Morgan- boy’s name
Francis- boy’s name. Frances is a girl’s name.
Leslie- I can’t remember which is which, but I’m going with Leslie for a guy and Lesley for a girl.
Robin- Robin for a boy, Robyn for a girl.
Jordan- boy’s name.
Keegan - boy’s name, but seriously, YUK! This should never be used for a human being of either gender.
Kelly - Girl’s name
Ashley - Boy’s name.
I’d like to add that ALL of those boy’s names have been stolen for girls, but that doesn’t make them girls names. However, I could never see Kelly as a guy’s name so I award that one to the girls
“Kelly” was a guy’s name almost exclusively until around 1965. By 1980, it was nearly exclusively a girl’s name. For my age cohort, it’s about 50-50 split, which is a large part of why I chose it.
The same story can be told for other names like “Leslie” and “Jordan”, although the dates vary somewhat.

… for all your CREEPY BABY NAMES OF DOOM needs.
Enjoy.
If Tristan is now a girl’s name, then is Isolde a boy’s name?
