By accounts that I have seen, I have an image of a desperately sad individual who should never, ever have been placed in a position of responsibility. Not because of any sexual identity issues he may or may not have, but simply because he was so vulnerable.
I’m not in a position to judge the severity of his crimes, but I’m inclined to thing that his sentence is inappropriately severe and intend to “send a message”. You want to send a message, text somebody. Inflicting suffering on someone is not justice, it is vengeance, and vengeance for its own sake is not the province of civilized people.

His suicide watch was a farce designed to humiliate him clinically because they couldn’t just have him beaten by trusties like in less enlightened times. Making him sleep and present in the morning bare naked in an empty cell isn’t about preventing suicide, it’s about showing power.
I’ll note that Quantico ignored the recommendations of brig psychiatrists to remove him from suicide watch. I’m not an expert, so I’ll defer to their evaluation that he was not a suicide risk, because, y’know, they’ve spent decades studying and practicing. Unless, of course, your hunches say otherwise.

What vengeance? He signed paperwork showing that he understood that revealing even one little bit of classified information could result in serious prison time, so he decided that he would steal more than half a million documents.
Punishment is not the same vengeance. You’re going down the path of buying into the childhood bullshit of people living with their consequences is actually some harm being unfairly foisted on them by mean people. It’s like the moody teenager who fails a class and then tells everyone that he failed because the teacher hates him, is unfair to him, the teacher has a grudge, etc. No, you dumb little snot, the reason you failed your test and have to go to summer school is because you didn’t do your homework and you couldn’t pass any of the tests; it isn’t because the teacher is mean and is angry at you.
And whatever the judge did would send a message to people. If the judge had gone along with the prosecution’s recommendation of 60 plus years, that would send a message. If the judge had sentenced him only to time served, that would send a different message. As it stands, the message sent seems to be one balancing the request of the prosecution and the pleas of the defense, which seems to send the message that cases will be addressed on their merits.
I’m learning so much today. So far I’ve learned both that Manning is suicidal because the Army won’t acknowledge his gender issues, and that he isn’t suicidal at all and was only put on suicide watch to embarrass him.
