The Yeast Is Red!
They might cost a tad bit more, too.
Hmmm. Should I get the hand gun for $300 or get the $25,000 flame thrower. Let me think about that…
What Steve said.
Long term, “progressives” will realize that the salad-bar approach to civil liberties just makes you look like a hypocrite, and if you want to be able to pass all of this health-care stuff or whatever, you have to stop getting voted out of office due to a compulsion to vocalize your fear of inanimate objects to people who would love to support you if only you would stop doing that one thing.
Not as easily or in the same numbers that they get them in the US.
That depends on what kind of crime they want to commit, doesn’t it? It’s also not really an answer to the question. If you’re sure that criminals won’t get hold of hand grenades amd flamethrowers, why shouldn’t they be legal?
It’s quite a bit more difficult to mass produce grenades and flamethrowers than it is to mix together some cocaine and baking powder.
Legalizing drugs would allow for much better and safer control pover the manufacture, though, so it would be a good thing.
Bullshit. If The Second Half Of The Second Amendment is the most important thing in your life, you aren’t going to vote for a Democrat in any event. Dems can genuflect before guns all they want, and the gun nuts will still say “Well, I don’t know. You’re a Democrat, and deep down you want to take my guns away.” So I say screw it. Why should Democrats keep pursuing votes that they will never get? If you’re going to think we want to take your guns away, dammit we might as well come out for gun control.
Because that’s simply not true. The moderates, the independents, and the disaffected voted for Obama this past election. It’s people like myself that put him in the White House. And inasmuch as everybody has a single issue they’re concerned about, mine is gun rights. Oh, I’m concerned about other things, and it’s a mischaracterization to say that gun owners only care about guns because they have other concerns as well, but somehow your party and people like yourself manage to lump us into some monolithic voting bloc.
As far as the mistrust of the Democratic Party with regard to guns, trust is earned. Of course gun owners are going to approach the Democrats with skepticism, what with prominent democrats like Schumer, McCarthy, Lautenberg, Feinstein and Boxer, not to mention Obama, Biden and Clinton, almost invariably making a run at gun control. This year has been the exception rather than the rule. So why then would there be trust?
And yet, gun owners helped to vote the Democrats into office. Doesn’t that mean anything to you?
Not really. I see two groups: Group A are people that vote for guns and guns only. No other issue matters. Group B are people that will vote for guns if all other issues are equal, but consider other matters. I think Obama got extremely few votes from Group A. I doubt he got a majority of Group B. I just think it’s time to face up to the fact that Group A is a lost cause. You can make a case for playing for Group B, but I don’t think that is very fertile ground, either.
Hmmm, should I start by basic grammar lessons, or by pointing out that some politically moderate or even liberal gun rights advocates also hate the polarization and knee jerk support of conservatives of the big gun lobbies?
As always it’s all or nothing. Republicans don’t seek out pro-choice people, do they? Of course not. They seek people who might be inclined to vote for them in spite of a cherished conviction. Even if Obama got a small percentage of gun owners (and I can assure you it was more than a small percentage) those are votes that he didn’t have before and as such contributed to his victory. He appealed to the middle and he got the middle. That’s how it works.
Now, if the Democrats start passing gun control legislation, that group of voters will evaporate, and he’ll have a tougher time winning re-election, as will the Congressional Democrats. I suspect that they know this, and as such they are treading lightly.
You say the pendulum is swinging towards the left with regard to guns? I suggest you look at the way gun control has played out since 1993. It has been victory after victory for gun owners. The AWB went away, the Heller decision came down, the 2nd is about to be incorporated, concealed carry is available in 48 states (38 of which are “shall issue” states), the Tiahrt and Vitter (and maybe Thune) Amendments… I grant you that things can change dramatically over the course of a few decades, but I think you’re quite wrong about the way gun rights are going to go. It’s not just swinging towards gun rights, it’s well past that, and it happened so subtly that you might not even have noticed.
I think there is a legitimate point here. If you normally buy 200 rounds of ammunition a year but you went out and bought 2000 rounds this year in anticipation of a ban, then you arguably did waste some money and bought more rounds than you would normally use. Even if you use the rounds at your normal rate over the next ten years, you still lost the use of some of your money for that period.
I think some of you are being fooled. Gun politics are more of an issue in congressional races than Presidential ones. Had Clinton & Congress waited until after the mid-term elections to push their anti-gun agenda they possibly wouldn’t have lost control of Congress in 1994. Remember: President Clinton himself said during the 1995 State of the Union address that it was the assault weapons ban that cost the Dems control of congress.
I don’t see them making this mistake twice. Let’s see what kind of things they push after January 2011.
You forgot about God and Gays.
I’d give him an “F” if he tried to add that to the list of probelms he’s addressing. Just doesn’t rank, sorry!
How disappointed will the gun nuts be if Obama never tries to take their guns away?
Well, I did laugh pretty hard when thinking about the stroke Sarah Brady was having when he signed the law repealing the prohibition against carrying in a national park.
However, why, may I ask, is someone who wants to preserve their Constitutionally protected rights a “nut”?
I’m sure I could think up some disparaging terms for those that believe in gay rights, abortion rights, etc…
Yogi and Boo-Boo are packing heat. The right to arm bears has been protected.
Just hand over that pick-a-nick basket and nobody needs to get hurt.
A grizzly prospect.
