Brainman

Last night, the Discovery Science Channel (Channel 112 here in Brookfield CT) aired “Brainman,” a program primarily about Daniel T., but included other savants, as well.

Daniel is a Brit who has some incredible intellectual powers. For example, he sat at a table in front of a group of people with pages and pages of a computer printout. As they listened and checked, Daniel recited Pi to 22,500 decimal places.

Took him a little over 5 hours to recite them

The program is being repeated on the same channel (here) at noon today, and again at 3pm. You can probably find it in your area by searching on Netscape TV or whatever.

Daniel performs a number of other mind numbing feats. And so do some other savants - but unlike Daniel, these others are autistic and impaired to various extents.

Well, a black kid (Orlando?) seems ok - not autistic. After getting beaned by a baseball as he was running to first, this young man can recite the date, day of the week and the weather on that day in rapid fire. Maybe scientists can channel that talent into something more productive - but I don’t think this idea is suggested on the program.

Among other things, Daniel is fluent in 9 languages, and declared he could learn to converse in another, totally new (to him) language in just 7 days. He is then challenged to prove the claim with Icelandic, probably one of the toughest of all languages to learn.

Does he? Watch the program and find out.

Oh. Randi had no hand in any aspect of this program.

Orlando’s weather recitation begins on the day he got beaned and continues for every day thereafter, right up to the present. He was just a kid whenhe got beaned, and looks now (says Wife) that he’s in his 20’s.

The show is must viewing for just about anyone.
