Brand new monitor--I think I'm gonna barf

I just got a new monitor here at work and I can’t find a setting that isn’t making me extremely nauseated. When I saw the monitor in a store, it seemed fine, but here in my office it’s screwing with my head.

Is it likely the refresh rate? This is killing me.

We need lot’s more information. What kind of monitor? Computer?

Compaq computer that’s a couple of years old. I’m switching from a Dell CRT to a Dell LCD, 19" SE198WFP.

It says its optimum resolution is 1440 x 900, which on my computer will only allow a refresh rate of 60. I can’t even look at the screen at that resolution. My eyes and stomach are rebelling.

Right at this moment, I have it at 800 x 600 with a refresh rate of 75 to see if that helps. It does. I’m only moderately uncomfortable at the moment, but damn this text is big!

And, perhaps, that’s why you’re nauseated. You’re compressing a roughly 16:9 display area into 4:3. Also, LCD displays aren’t technically multisync; they don’t downgrade resolutions gracefully.

Since I said I was already nauseated when I switched, and since it’s gotten better since I switched, I’m having a tough time thinking that the 800x600 is the problem.

Oh man, that happens to me too. If a monitor is at the wrong resolution I get extremely sick.

I just play around with the resolutions until I find one that works.

You’re not queasy because it’s at 60hhz. 60 Hz on a CRT vs an LCD are two entirely different things re how it is preceived by the eyes. If anything LCD are far less nausea inducing because of the flat geometry and image stability.

1: You need to set the resolution precisely at the LCD monitors natural resolution. Anything else will look like shit and be quease inducing. If you need to up size the text and screen icons use the OS font and icon systems controls to do this.

2: Some people like “clear-type” icon and font shadowing and some don’t. Try
turning it on and off to see what you prefer.

3: Make sure the PC is identifying the monitor type correctly and is not trying to force a resolution on the monitor that’s outside it’s spec rating. Make sure the video adapter is set to display to a wide screen format.

I have already set the monitor at the resolution suggested which is 1440x900. At the resolution suggested, I can’t even look at the screen. I have installed the driver for the monitor. I have changed all of the brightness and contrast and color settings I can find in the hopes one of them would help.

800x600 is way too big, but at least I can look at it without feeling like I’m going to vomit. If anyone else suggests that 800x600 is the problem, I’m going to switch back to 1440x900 and barf on THEM.

The clear type font is definitely better, though I think I’m going to have to switch back to my old monitor. Thanks for all of the suggestions.

Before you do that, what’s the lighting like in your workplace? If it’s flourescents, try turning them off as a test.

Edit: ok yes, try a DVI cable instead of the VGA one as well.

My office has fluorescent lights. I did turn them off and then adjusted the monitor brightness. That did help some.

I’m not at work tomorrow, but on Friday I’ll try again. Maybe my sinuses were so bizarre today that they were affecting everything.

Thanks, everyone!

Did you try any settings in between?

I ended up happy with 1024x768 for mine and I can live with it, even though the monitor’s resolution is higher. Text isn’t too big, and the monitor is set all the way to the back edge of the desk. It’s the only setting I can tolerate.
