Federal Express is a huge employer here in Memphis, so you see lots of Fed Ex jackets around town. I was asking a friend of mine who works there how an employee acquired one of these jackets which look quite warm. He said that folks who work out on the tarmac are issued one when they are hired, but if you want more than one you’ll have to pay for it. He also said that office types are sometimes given jackets as “bravo zulu,” which is apparently FedEx slang for “you done good–here’s your bonus schwag.”
Q: What does “bravo zulu” (BZ) stand for? Is this phrase ideosynchratic to Fed Ex, or is it, as I suspect, an adaptaion of a military phrase?
