Break dancing to be olympic sport

Figure skating has compulsory figures and then the “freestyle”(?) competition. I imagine break dancing would go the same way.

Do it right, and we could base the winning team on which one caused the highest total number of deaths.

The actual figures part of figure skating (the circles and figure eights and so forth) haven’t been part of competition for a long time. I think perhaps because it’s not very television friendly.

It’s been a long time since I’ve seen skating. I had no idea the compulsories had been nixed.

They were removed from international competition in 1990

Cricket has been an Olympic event. Briefly.

The event was held at the 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris … but only two countries competed, Great Britain and hosts France.

I’m not sure of the logistics, but the Mavericks surfing competition has been held regularly in California.

Is that really true of cricket? I thought soccer/football was more widely played. And looking at the list of countries in the ICC rankings, I think they’re all former British colonies.

I thought I read that once but now I can only find lists where it is listed 7th or 9th. All say it is too difficult to be certain because there are so many factors. So I’ll revise it to “one of the most participated sports in the world”!

It’s played in 125 countries though but yes, certainly a sport exported by colonialism.

I don’t really consider it a competitive sport if it can’t be objectively measured.

It may be an atheletic endeavour but I don’t think it belongs in the olympics.

I love winter sports but all the freestyle bullshit bores me to tears. Stick it on a course and time it though…count me in.

there is also trad climbing where they don’t worry as much about speed. As you might expect it is the older form of climbing.

It happens somewhere in the world pretty much every weekend. The most important skill of any surfer is adapting to whatever the ocean throws at them - wave selection being key. That being the case, it can sometimes be a very dull spectator experience. And despite it being my favorite pastimes, the sport is one of my least favorite kinds of competitions.

Moved to Game room and merged in another thread.

Another judged sport, but designed to appeal to the youth. I bet it still isn’t cool enough to knock Women’s Beach Volleyball off the tv coverage.

I’ll be sticking with the classics

“Cricket? Nobody understands cricket. You gotta know what a crumpet is before you can understand cricket.”

Honestly, cricket is a lot easier to understand than baseball, and I say that as an American.

I’m just imagining the commentary for Olympic Breakdancing.

“Am I mistaken, Glenn, but was that not an excessively sick move?”

“Indeed, Robert, indeed. The sickest. I might say that our competitors have been quite ill this fine day in lovely Paris.”

“Oh dear… That was not a very controlled transition out of a head spin, the Romanian judge seems very unimpressed. That is certainly going to cost him.”

“I find that not dope at all, Robert. Not dope at all.”

Is there such a thing a televised breakdancing? I know you can find it on YouTube but you can find Tide pod consumption as well.

The ‘extreme’ winter sports had been covered a lot before making their Olympic debuts. ESPN2 was originally set up for those type of events, which worked well on tape delay.

I’ve definitely seen breakdancing on TV way more than I ever saw televised synchronized diving or synchronized trampolining prior to the 2000 Olympics.

Which is not saying much.

beach volleyball cracks me up because of who it appeals to. I’m pretty sure one of the rules for women is they have to wear a swimsuit. (might be true for men too) Also I don’t think any of the women wear 1 piece suit.
