Breaking Bad 4.10 "Salud" 9/18

Sorry about the inconsistent thread starting, I’ve had inconsistent computer access.

We left off with Walt and Jesse beating the shit out of each other. Please spoiler box anything contained in the previews for the next episode, as many of us try to avoid those.

I could’ve cheered when Jesse was dressing down the Mexican chemist.

Og, I love this show!

ETA: How dumb is Skyler?!

A little speechless. Gus on the brink of death, shouting at the cartel loyalists. Mike garotting the cartel hitman. Jesse blowing that guy away at the end of the episode. So many bad-asses.

Another bald character, that Mexican chemist. Man, they’re everywhere in this show.

Yes, but she can’t stand to see her help go unappreciated.

But I was expecting her to remind Ted that her name is still on the books.

I think they’re making up for being too late for the next Emmys. But I think they may sweep it next year for best actor and supporting actor. There may even be an in-house competition between Jesse and Gustavo and Mike. Great episode, other than having to listen to Walter and the kid yapping at each other.

 Gawd-damned!

“Kid, get us outta here.” Gus possibly dying of poison (misjudged dosage? not enough antidote in the little pill he took?), Mike hit in the side, maybe bleeding out.

Skyler letting Ted in on the first layer of the Dirty Little Secret; like a rotten onion, there’s layers and layers, and I now believe Ted may actually be the most willfully blinkered man alive.

Voltaire, Skyler had to tell Ted, because Ted has to pay the IRS and get them off of his (and thus hers) backs, and out of Beneke’s books. He and his company is a not-too-straight-but-nonetheless-traceable line right back to Walt, via Skyler and her book-cooking. Their covers may or may not be substantial enough to withstand intense scrutiny from the IRS’s forensic accountants. But how long will her “dumb blond bimbo” act hold up if the IRS starts looking in the White’s financials?

Short of writing out the check herself and mailing it to the IRS, or sticking a gun to Ted’s head and saying, “Sign the fucking check,” what else was she to do?

Chef: at least they gave RJ Mitte something to do this episode other than eat and make some sarcastic quip. But I think it threw off the eps. pacing quite a bit.

Ahh, the Breaking Bad I know and love. Damn that was high-octane.

I liked the exchanges between Walt and Walt Jr. And that self-pity performance was, again amazing by Bryan. All that guilt he was vomiting up. Finally. Its what was keeping him down, making him act irrationally. I think Walt Jr’s words snapped him out of it. I think he’s going to collect himself again, and try to repair whatever he can.

Gus had took a calculated risk, and knew he was gambling with his own life. I loved how he saved Jesse from drinking the stuff. So, being a clever man, hopefully he has a triage or ER somewhere close by, so he can be treated ASAP, and if so, presumably Mike can be treated there as well. I’m wondering if it was an antidote he took, or some kind of absorbent substance that would soak up as much of the poison as possible; hence the puking.

At that point maybe she had to tell him, but Saul was right, and the inheritance story was just plain stupid. Heck, arranging for some middleman to buy the company, tax liabilities and all, would have been much better, and that’s just off the top of my head.

Even after pulling the inheritance move and seeing that Ted didn’t pay the back taxes, I think there were better ways to handle it. I know Skyler isn’t (yet?) that ruthless, but after Ted rather rudely told her to take a hike, (and before she spilled the beans) she could have arranged for some anonymous intimidation. Or something. Because. This. Will. Not. End. Well.

…And my guess is it will be Beneke paying with his life. Skyler might just be next up to really break bad.

Too much tension in that scene… I was on the edge of my seat waiting for Jesse to call him a ‘bitch.’

That was odd, I was wondering why they left that out. Also, I find it odd that they Skyler completely rules out negotiating a payment plan or settling for a smaller payment. I thought that was pretty standard. I suppose she just wants it done with ASAP. I suppose, in retrospect, a better idea would have been to have Saul tell him that he inherited all that money…however, the IRS will garnish it all for the back taxes.

CMYK touched on it this. At first I, like everyone else I’m sure, thought it was a vitamin or herbal pill. When he took the tequila from Jesse, it was pretty clear it was an antidote. When he forced himself to puke, I assumed it was activated charcoal since it’s my understanding that you have to purge that after it’s absorbed the poison. In fact, when he wiped his face on the towel I figured we’d see some black residue on it to confirm that. Though I have to wonder why he didn’t do it sooner other then for dramatic effect and so we have something to deal with next week.

I’d have to go back and check, but wasn’t Jesse’s meth at basically the same purity as Gale’s, before he insisted on meeting Walter?

I’m not sure, but it was pretty good for a first run with all those new variables. With some tweaking, (heh) I would imagine it could be further improved.

ETA: Not that it matters, because I presume that lab will be having a catastrophic and probably fiery “accident.”

I loved the look of “This kid is okay” approval on Gus and Mike’s face when Jesse was telling the “asshole” to clean the place and do what what he said.

Does anybody know what kind of liqueur that was (minus the poison)? You’d think Gustavo would know to take charcoal with him, or at least some ipecac.

I’m guessing (no insider knowledge so I won’t spoilerize) that Mike is a goner. It’s been a while since they killed off somebody important in the show, and without Gus the tension would be cut too much. I wonder if he has an heir apparent.

I liked Walt Jr.'s “at least last night you were real” response. And it’s the most RJ Mitte has had to do in a couple of years at least. Though as somebody who’s drove piece-of-shit Chevettes and Yugos when he was much older than Walt Jr., I have to say that a PT Cruiser ain’t sexy but it IS a brand new car, bitch!

If Jesse gets Gus back to Mexico then I think he’s got damned near carte blanche to take a crap in Gus’s living room if he wants to without fear of repercussion since however his mentorship started out he’s now officially earned his keep. This will make his final break with Walt the more interesting.

Would Walt Jr. have any idea who Walt meant when he said Jesse? I know Skyler knows who Jesse Pinkman is even if she doesn’t know his full significance and Hank (who wasn’t in this episode which means he’ll probably be a major presence next week) certainly knows but I was wondering if his name was ever leaked around the wee one.

I think I remember him calling it “zafiro mezcal” - so a kind of mezcal (tequilla is a form of mezcal) and zafiro means sapphire, so that could refer to the color/brand-name.

Yeah, I think so, too. It looked like he got shot very near the heart. He’s had so many close encounters with bullets, it’s about time one caught him for good.

I don’t remember Walt mentioning Jesse by name to Jr. - I think I was distracted during that sequence. What did he say about him?

Walt said something to the effect of, “That’s good, Jesse,” when asking Walt Jr. if he was enjoying his fabulous PT Cruiser. This might be the one time in the whole season where Walt has shown any kind of self-awareness. I think he’s honestly and seriously regretting bugging Jesse’s vehicle, and even though he’s self-medicating and probably not lucid, his minor breakdown this episode is proof, I hope, that he’s become aware of how badly he’s been treating Jesse.

So, there are three episodes left this season, and I don’t think they’ve even started filming the final season. . .

The good news is AMC has a new post-Civil War period series based on the building of the Transcontinental Railroad, starting on Nov. 6. So we’ll be roughly a month into our Breaking Bad withdrawal when this new series, Hell on Wheels, premieres.

I started a thread on it here, with a link to the trailer. Check it out!

Ho-lee shit.

I just finished watching the episode and my mouth was literally agape for that last 5-minute sequence as soon as the cartel started dropping dead.

That was some seriously badass shit. I thought Gus was cool when he walked out into the sniper’s crosshairs. Now he has reached a godlike status of badassery. I mean, walking into the lion’s den and taking out the whole damn lot of 'em with a three-man team (one of whom wasn’t even in on the plan)! And of course Jesse is really coming into his own too. As I’ve said a few times now I don’t even care about Walt anymore (or what happens to him). I’m going with Team Gus all the way.

Some additional thoughts: I think I see where this is going now. With both Gus and Mike critically wounded, Jesse stands to inherit quite a bit of power. It won’t be long before Jesse is Walt’s boss, and Walt’s fate is in his hands…

Yes - that was so awesome. As was the follow through at the end of the episode. I love that Jesse has proven his worth.

Agreed. Ted has proven to be completely untrustworthy (beyond the initial cooking the books thing), so him having this information can’t bode well.

I loved his Freudian-Jesse-slip. And that he expressed real remorse for being such a dick. Now he just needs to find a way to make amends if its not too late and/or his pride/control trip doesn’t get in the way again.
