Ahhhhh, I got it…WIRE!
There is an informative discussion in the comments at this website, about halfway down the page started by TH, discussing the legalities of what Hank is doing with Jessie.
A few highlights:
-
Was Jessie Mirandized? We did not see him Mirandized, but it does not mean hew wasn’t.
-
Was this a custodial interrogation? Was Jesse free to go? Was he actually interrogated? None of this is clear.
-
Any violations of Miranda or other rights pertain to any information used in against Jesse, they do not protect Walter.
-
the tape itself would likely not be admissible against Walter, it would require Jesse to actually testify in court.
-
However, should Jesse die or be killed, then the tape would become admissible if it is shown that Walter was responsible for Jesse’s death (I think , this was less clear to me)
Walt isn’t going to court. He isn’t going to get caught because of nitpicky legalities. There’s going to be neo nazi hitmen, possible explosions, plenty of interpersonal drama and probably quite a few comic book villain-y badass moments.
Well sure, I know that, and you know that, but Hank doesn’t know that.
Puking. Why are you puking?
Because the cancer’s back!
I think that Marie’s therapy session was included to let us know that she would do anything to nail Walt. Later we see her allow Jesse to stay in the house without any fuss and even makes the kid coffee. If they hadn’t shown the therapy session, we all would be wondering why Marie didn’t throw a fit about the junkie in the house.
Am I mistaken or did Walt grab the lotto ticket after he realized that the house was empty and before he called the carpet cleaning guys?
Jesse told Walt that he was going to get him where he lives but that could totally have been misdirection. I think that he has a more subtle and brilliant plan that he is going to share with Hank and Gomie.
Why would that be misdirection?
A few things:
Walt and Hank are both manipulators of Jesse.
Skyler and Marie are both all-in supporting their husbands.
Skyler’s ruthlessness didn’t surprise me, she’s been cold and calculating in the money laundering business.
Vince Gilligan really wanted to emphasis something this episode: Walt really cared for Jesse, almost like a son. Hank said something about it, then Walt twice refused to consider killing Jesse. But I think Skyler’s suggestion planted the seed in his head, there may be no other way.
I agree with the posters that say Jesse will try to get to Walt through his pride, the Heisenberg name. Walt didn’t like it when Hank thought Gale was the master cook. And the park bench scene is reminiscent of the first fake Heisenberg in Season 2.
Gomez is a dead man. Perhaps by the Nazis trying to get to Jesse?
What he said to Walt was very intentional to make him think that something is happening but what’s coming is very different.
To me, this has been the most surprising reveal about Walt’s character for the last couple of seasons. Considering the very awkward hugs and the poisoning of Brock and the way that Jesse largely effed up the initially sweet deal with Gus, it’s amazing that Walt really does care about the guy. Only his wife and kids (who he isn’t awkward towards when demonstrating affection) are on par with Jesse.
When Walt and Skyler were in hotel and Skyler told Walt he needed to kill Jesse I was really expecting Walt to say “Absolutely not, he’s like family to me”.
Walt has never really told Skyler about how close his relationship with Jesse is. Back in season 3, when she was trying to get Jesse to drop charges after Hank beat Jesse up, he claims that Jesse is someone he just barely knows, that they’re not even friends. Even now, he can’t admit it to her.
It’s almost like he’s been having an affair this whole time.
I would be careful about saying Walt really cares for Jesse considering how he’s treated him over the course of the series. On the one hand, yes, Walt stuck his neck out for Jesse and saved his life and helped him get clean. On the other hand he’s manipulated him in every possible way, used him to commit murder, and let his girlfriend die because she was in Walt’s way. He has not only sabotaged Jesse when he wanted something Walt didn’t, he’s tried to make sure he is isolated and dependent on Walt so he can’t turn to someone else. The “blood money” thing was a great example: when Jesse wanted to quit before Walt was ready for him to quit, he said ‘I’m reneging on our deal and keeping all your money, it’s blood money.’ Then he felt bad and gave Jesse the money, and when Jesse decided Walt was right, Walt completely reversed himself because Jesse’s money-throwing stunt was bringing them unwanted DEA attention. And it’s never enough for Jesse to do what Walt wants. He always has to agree with Walt’s point of view and do what Walt wants for reasons that make Walt feel good. That’s why Jesse finally said “can you stop working me for like a second?”
Walt has arguably hurt Jesse more than any other living person on the show. As a father substitute, Walt is a nightmare. He cares about Jesse but he’s never let that supercede what he wants in the moment. I’ll say this again: Walt isn’t reluctant to kill Jesse because he cares about him and has his best interests at heart. It’s because he can’t admit he’s failed Jesse and can’t talk his way out of this problem. Walt is never able to admit he’s failed unless he can come up with a better way to get what he wants.
I know and I knew he wouldn’t say that, I guess it was just that I wanted him to. Of course, he couldn’t though. It would really mess things up for Skyler to realize not only how close they are (like father and son) but to understand what a messed up dynamic they have.
I think he really does. Walt won’t be whistling at work the next day if Jesse is killed, that’s for sure. I think it could really mess him up.
Of course, they have the father-son relationship from Hell, but still.

Maybe Jesse was onto something when he said “Isn’t it obvious? He’s gay for me!”
I know that Jesse’s character was originally supposed to be killed in the first season, but Paul’s popularity and the way he and Cranston (who I’ve read he’s very close to IRL) work together made Gilligan change his mind and keep him as a regular instead. Does anybody know any details of the original plot? (I’ve wondered if he was supposed to be killed in the basement of his house with the piece of crockery, or by Tuko, or by someone else.)
I’m not saying he won’t be sad if Jesse dies. Just that describing this as caring is, I don’t know, incomplete. Maybe the idea of his relationship with Jesse is his last connection to real human feeling, but he has been terrible to Jesse (and for Jesse) pretty much from day one.
It wasn’t because Jesse was popular with fans. The decision was made way before that: he was originally going to be killed at the end of the season, but they decided Jesse was too good and the writers’ strike interfered with their original plans. Wikipedia has some details.
Then again, everybody is gay for Pinkman, right?
Right?
Or is it just me?
Walt cares about Jesse the way a Bond villain cares about a henchman. He wants a loyal, effective lieutenant. He doesn’t care about how happy or self-actualized the henchman is. (Except to the extent that a truly unhappy henchman may stop being loyal or effective.)
It that was the case, he would never have waffled as much as he has done before booking Jesse on a one-way trip to Belize.
