When the DEA raids a house with Walt riding along, Jesse jumps out of a second story window and a nude woman runs to the window. Perhaps the DVDs are not edited and the show is? The “fucks” are numerous and unedited in any fashion in the pilot on DVD, although I do recall the one in season 3 being edited for TV.
That’s it. My understanding was that the pilot was not created for AMC, but nobody else in the cable world picked it up, so AMC grabbed it but edited the nudity for broadcast.
Yep, boobs were blurred. Fucks muted.
That is awesome on a number of levels. First off, great tune. And the lyrics sum up the series to that point very well. And Bryan Cranston gets paid to stand around in his fedora looking like a badass, which is awesome as well. When I first saw it, I knew nothing of the narcocorridos, Mexican folk music that praises drug traffickers. That this is included in this particular production just adds to the edge.
Pretty sad that being a narcocorrido and praising the wrong cartel will get you killed.
One of the more impressive scenes of the show is here.
Those guys don’t even flinch. Badassery.
I just finished rewatching all three seasons. I don’t know why, but the end hit me much harder this time than it did the first. Much harder. Maybe because, having gone through it all a second time, I understand and care about them all more.
So what does everyone think of Walt at this point? What do the writers want or expect us to think? He’s responsible, one way or another, for so many deaths*… at what point do the scales just become too imbalanced and he cannot be sympathized with? I still love him, but I think he’s become… I don’t know.
Jesse may be a fuckup, but I think he’s a fundamentally better person than Walt.
*Has anyone ever counted? Aside from the plane, I count off the top of my head 14:
The Cousins -2
Tuco, NoDoze and Gonzo -= 5
Emilio and Krazy 8 =7
Jane =8
The kid, the two drug dealers, and Combo =12
Spooge =13
Gale = 14
You could even include the truck full of immigrants along with all the other incidental murders the Cousins committed on their way to killing Walter to avenge Tuco, and possibly all the cartel guys who died because Gus felt that with a handy-dandy chemist like Walt at his command, he didn’t need the cartels, so Walt’s choice to get into this life led to those deaths.
Hey, I jsut realized something that I think Vince Gilligan did deliberately… the Cousins are relentless, unstoppable killing machines…kinda like living Terminators. Remember the scene with the surviving cousin dragging himself out of bed and dragging his bloody stumps across the floor in his relentless, machine-like quest to murder Walt?
Anyone remember the Terminator dragging himself and his “stumps” towards John Conner?
I look forward to the 3rd season DVD to see if there’s a commentary on that scene, and that was a deliberate shoutout to the Terminator.
what kind of boots where those two mexicans wearing
As mentioned, we’re now catching up on season three on AMC. Just watched the ep with them hunting the house fly, which, while amusing, really dragged in the second half. Enough emoting, already.
stoid: My 2 pence: These are all nasty people; the dark humor is all that keeps this series from being just another violent drug story. I can’t really sympathize with any of the characters, as they are all deeply fucked in the head or involved in criminal activity in one aspect or another. Whenever I find myself having some sympathy for Walt or Jesse, reality says: “Yo bitch, they’re drug dealers, yo.” The story is the star, much like The Sopranos or Deadwood or any other excellent series where the characters are unlikeable people, but the writing is brilliant and the actors superb.
Wait… you think they can’t be sympathized with because they are drug dealers? They stopped being human beings when they became criminals? That’s terribly harsh, isn’t it? Do you feel that way about everyone who is a criminal?
Put the BB characters into two columns, sympathetic and unsympathetic. As it unfolds, quite a few people switch columns, that’s why BB is brilliant.
Walt gets more insufferable and Jesse more likable for the most part. Hank is such a blowhard, he was hard to watch initially but particularly upon second viewing, Hank’s story is gripping.
Oh hell, I forgot who I was responding to. You’re one of those people who can’t seem to have a discussion about things, right? I won’t be engaging you in a pointless argument, nor answer accusations based on whatever noises you’re hearing in your head.
I stopped being able to sympathize with any of the characters except for Jesse. (I’d feel sympathy for Walt Jr., but he hasn’t really had much of a presence.) That may well change next season. Jesse is the most heart-breaking character I can recall in pretty much any show. Aaron Paul has been simply brilliant in showing his vulnerability.
Other characters, I can understand how they came to where they are, but I don’t sympathize with them. I feel bad for Gale, but what did he think would happen if he went to work for a drug lord?
LOL–haven’t read the thread because I know have 30 consecutive eps saved on my DVR. Can’t wait to watch them, but for the life of me, not sure when I’ll have the time!
Yeah, Jesse has steered himself into some bad situations. He finally:
gets straight and is attending meetings, seemingly becoming a more sympathetic character, then decides to sell meth to his NA group along with his stoner friends acting as shills. There goes the ol’ sympathy, right down the drain, which is, I’m sure, what the writers had in mind. Walt appears to be cracking under the strain of all those deaths he’s responsible for, but it’s not stopping him from continuing to cook.
Huh. Well…okee dokee then.
I didn’t know about them until this post. That does add new dimensions.
I’m the reverse of most people in that I don’t consider Jesse sympathetic. He’s a monumental fuck-up on a number of levels, from getting involved in meth making when he doesn’t know what he’s doing before the first episode but especially
-Trying to sell drugs at NA
-Shooting up with his junkie girlfriend
-Essentially blackmailing Walt into letting him be his lab assistant again when the other guy was clearly much better (Walt would probably not be in any trouble with Gus and Lab Guy [sorry, can’t remember his name] would still be alive if it weren’t for Jesse’s refusal to “take the money and run”
He’s not boiled down evil or remorseless or anything, which is what makes it a good show, but I like Walt better even though he’s become increasingly corrupted. I don’t blame him for the deaths in the plane crash- that was too much of a butterfly effect thing and she was probably going to overdose eventually anyway. The deaths of Tuco and the cousins should have resulted in parades; now go back for the wretched old uncle and complete the set.
Saul is arguably the least sympathetic character on the show outside of the Cartel figures, but I love the performance.
I guess it’s because Jesse is so pitifully tragic that I feel sympathy for him. He had a few moments of almost being redeemed, but after the last episode, that can never happen.
Out of curiosity:
Vince Gilligan said the title “Breaking Bad” comes from an old southern expression. I’m middle aged and southern but I’ve never heard the expression. Has anybody else heard it before?
There is some weird shit going on down there.
But…what do you do? If he didn’t do it, they would have killed Walt, then killed him. He could run, but how? You think Gus wouldn’t find him? It may not have been quite so obvious as shooting someone who’s got a gun in your face, but it’s still a kind of self-defense.
And the whole going to the cops… play that out for a minute and tell me how that works? Particularly for Walt and his family?
