Breaking Bonaduce

I just watched the pilot.

My first impression is that by the time this thing is over plenty of guts are going to be wrenched.

The time slot is also key as VH1 is slipping it in just before HBO can get their new season line up in full swing.

I think I’m going to have to watch this series for all of it’s gory, explosive, saddening, sickening, train wreck-ery that it seems is coming down the pike.

Anybody else have an opinion on this reality show?

Link for the the confused

I read a New York Times article about the series recently. Without spoiling anything, I find it a little disconcerting that people will want to watch real people go through things like this.

And that people will display themselves like this. Surely there’s other ways to make money.

Oh, that’s right, it probably won’t be PILES of money.

Fame must be like crack, once some people have had a little taste of it all dignity goes out the window and they will do anything for another hit. This is the first I’ve heard of this series and I just can’t believe it.

I’ve enjoyed listening to Danny since the days when he was on Chicago radio on WLUP. I watched the premiere and liked how his love for his children came through, as well as his love for Gretchen. Still, from what I’ve heard about the series, it’s clear he has a lot of demons and, like the promos suggest, it’ll be like watching a train wreck. It’s definately a Season Pass on my TiVo…

I did watch the first episode, and I honestly hope it’s not as much of a train-wreck as the promos make it out to be. Danny’s got a lot of problems, obviously, but it looks like he’s making an honest effort, and I was really surprised and touched when he opted to drive home to his wife instead of staying in Vegas and risking temptation.

I think that’s what makes the show interesting.

It’s going to be a bumpy ride but could have a good turn around before it’s all over.

If it was nothing but despair I don’t think people would watch but that’s not the case (so far).

He use to dj here in Detroit for a few years and I was very hesitant to listen to a has been actor’s program.

The man was really good at what he did and has a great voice for radio. I was sad to see him leave our area.
But I won’t watch this. In general, I don’t watch Rtv anyways.

You don’t know what Marley23 knows. I read the same NYT article.

I thought Bonaduce was already broken?

And if I make my own small hijack here, what is up with VH1 trying to resurrect the careers of has-been stars and parlaying their misery into shows… well I know the answer is money, you can get this “talent” cheaply, but I mean c’mon, who wants to watch this schlock?

Anyone interested in this series, Danny and Gretchen were on Howard Stern this morning, and there’s a good summary at Mark’s Friggin…:

Does anyone else think this show terrifying? Would it surprise anyone if Danny went OJ on Gretchen? The look in his eyes is pure rage and you can just see that very little is holding him back from really hurting someone.

I feel so sad for everyone in that family, Gretchen, the kids, and even Danny himself. Has there ever been a bigger trainwreck in reality TV than Danny? As icky as it makes me feel, I just can’t stop watching - - - just like a bloody car crash.

Perhaps it’s all acting?

How real are reality shows these days?

That guy isn’t a real psychiatrist, is he?

Why would you doubt that? He acts like a lot of psychologists I’ve encountered in the past…

So why woulnd’t Danny Bonaduce just tell VH1 to turn off the cameras and quit?

Can’t help but feeling that Gretchen wanted to do the show because she feels safer with the cameras there.

Apparently so:

I’m not watching this show – I’m just not into seeing real life personal tragedies like this. On the other hand, my husband and I thoroughly enjoyed Tommy Lee Goes To College. That show was an absolute hoot and a half! No misery, just campy, all-out fun.

Interesting note about this one, though; Danny’s bio on the above-linked page says he’s still co-hosting the morning radio show, “The Jamie and Danny Show,” which he’s not. He was fired in June and is now suing his former on-air partner for slander.

I guess I expected them to believe in a level of privacy during therapy.
