Breaking news: Trump safe after shots fired near Palm Beach golf club 2024/09/15

That’s just what i was thinking. This is what i expect a security success to look like. No one was injured, the only person endangered was the perp, and they caught him. I mean, maybe the secret service’s was endangered, but they sign up for that, and weren’t hurt.

Are you accounting for the melon felon lofting a shot into the rough or beyond on the other side of the fairway?

So he’s an impotent wannabe assassin?

A defense lawyer can say anything they want. That doesn’t mean anything. It’s very clear what he was doing and why. He will be charged with the attempted assassination and won’t have much of a defense.

The same could be said about his efforts to aid Ukraine. An impotent wannabe supporter of Ukraine.

As far as how close he got to Trump, it looks like Trump was somewhere near hole 5 when shots were fired (by Secret Service, on discovering the impotent wannabe), but had the impotent wannabe not been discovered ahead of Trump, Trump would have gotten considerably closer on hole 6.

The NY Times has a map/diagram of how things were situated at the top of its website right now, but I don’t have a subscription, so I can’t gift link the article it’s likely embedded in. But maybe someone with a subscription can link the article before it disappears into the obscura. I believe this would be the article:

Here you go (gift link):

Secret Service Did Not Search Golf Course Perimeter

This x 100%.

So far, he’s only been charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and possession and receipt of a firearm with an obliterated serial number.

But, but, but, I thought the pubbies had no problems with convicted felons getting shot sans trial.

This is probably a good legal strategy. The charge is enough to keep him locked up , so the full investigation can continue while keeping the trial out of the news until after election day.
The judicial process should be isolated from politics.

What seem to be credible sources are now identifying it as a SKS variant with an AK style magazine. That doesn’t really tell us anything other than it’s common and relatively cheap.

Laura Loomer on Xitter:

Yes, how? It is a complete mystery why gun laws are so lax.

Except for the long history of actual, professional snipers being spotted by things like a glint of metal or the glint of glass from a scope.

Based on photos published of where the would-be shooter was waiting I wouldn’t describe the grass as “tall”, and not particuarly thick. We are, after all, talking about a golf course, not a jungle.

Based on his arrest photos he was wearing a pink shirt.

The golf outing was not on Trump’s schedule and therefore was not announced.

Trump is, however, known to spend much of his own free time golfing. He is also known to use his own golf courses. If you wanted to find Trump during unscheduled time “Trump golf course” is a pretty good guess.

My concern as well.

Unlikely he has any sort of actual training in how to be a sniper. So far as I can tell he’s never served in any sort of military. Which is fortunate for Trump and, given the potential consequences a Trump assassination, also good for the rest of us.

When Trump was president it is my understanding that that is exactly what they used to do.

Trump is no longer PotUS. Although I agree that right now he probably does need that level of a security. Even so, if nutbars keep trying to take shots at him eventually one could still get lucky.

That seems to be the leading guess.

Pretty sure it was not an actual AK-47 as the news media keeps saying “AK-47 style weapon”. But I’m not sure that makes an actual difference from a practical viewpoint. It’s basically arguing over brand names. They might just as well say “scary long gun”

Moderator Note

Let’s keep gun control politics out of breaking news threads, please.

As of now (early morning Eastern Time on 9/17) there’s no diagram accompanying the article. At least not at that exacat link.

Just a picture (I almost wrote “head shot”) of the SS’s Director speaking at a press conference and another picture of a bunch of cops standing around some trees on some golf course.

Okay, here’s a bbc article that is free and has a similar picture:

In other words, he’s a nut.

“Former neighbour Kim Mungo describes Routh as a “sweetheart” and…alleged that he used to keep “loads of stolen property and stuff” at his home, and said she saw Routh and his family firing guns in the open.”

The perfect neighbor.

According to the Journalist’s Guide to Firearms Identification it most definitely, probably, likely, possibly was an AK-47

All the best sweetheart neighbors have lots of stolen property and gunfire.

Then again, by Ms. Mungo’s standards that may well be the class act on their block.

I don’t know what Routh’s neighborhood was like; but there are areas where ‘householder and family firing guns in the open’ is entirely normal. I live in one of them. And no, I’m not in the least worried that the neighbors will open fire either on me or on either random or carefully selected public figures. They’re sighting in for deer season.

Really, it was only a concept of an assassination.
