As odd as it sounds, I didn’t notice until I took a yoga class years ago that I only breathe through one nostril. The other one is usually clogged. Not sure if this is because my nose was broken many years ago and I never had it set.
What’s really strange is that the nostril I breathe through changes… sometimes I can breathe through my left, other times through my right, never through both.
Well, actually, now that I have a nasty cold, I can’t breathe through either. But I used some Afrin nasal spray (I try to avoid it, but was desperate to get some sleep), and once it kicked in I could breathe easily through both nostrils at the same time!
Anyone know anything about this condition? Yeah yeah, I have to see a doctor, I realize that. But it can’t hurt to get some general info before I go in to see a specialist. =)
Crafter – gotta ask one question. Do you work with/are affiliated with a company that manufactures (or anythign similar) Nasonex? I ask because of the conspicuous use of the trademark symbol every time you typed it. Or were you just having fun? =)
Total hijack – was at a theater where (won’t get into details), before the show started, the host was talking about free Budweiser for everyone. I asked him what if we didn’t like Budweiser?
At which point a guy behind me said that I didn’t know good beer if I didn’t like Budweiser.
I replied that I knew lots of people who drank Bud in spite of the fact it wasn’t a good beer (it sucks, but we like it) and I was fine with that, but I’d never heard anyone EVER say it was actually a good beer!
He figured I didn’t like light pilsners. I said I did, but Budweiser was awful. At which point it hit me. I asked him if he worked for Budweiser.
Pause. Pause. Pause. Then he admitted that he did.
At which point it all made sense.
Not knocking Nasonex, by the way! Never looked into it. I just want to know if I’m getting an unbiased opinion from a user, a doctor, or a potentially biased (if still valid) opinion from a rep for the company.
I suffer from the same malady. Combine nasty seasonal allergies with a deviated septum that was not correctly repaired with surgery and I have the same one working nose hole issue.
I just got over it. I will not have my septum straightened out again. That was probably one of the worst surgeries that I have endured.
Also, stay away from Afrin or the like. Bad stuff for your nose and very easy to become dependant upon it.
It was the best surgery I had though. between getting hit in the face as a toddler with can of flour and a few too many baseballs to the nose, I couldn’t breath out of one side of my nose either. A deviated nasal septum, and sinus polyps made me a real mouth breather.
No , I don’t hold stock in the company, nor am I affiliated with the company in any way.
My nose has been clogged up for years. A couple months ago it finally got to the point that it was causing a lot of problems. So I went to an ENT. He gave me a sample of Nasonex. He told me to use it everyday for 1 week. If my sinus cleared up, he said he would simply write a prescription for me.
So I started using it. For the first 4 days nothing happened. And then my sinuses started to drain. It was like a waterfall… fluid that had been stuck up in my sinuses cavities came rushing out. It was uncomfortable for a few days; the fluid drained into my throat and caused me to cough. After all the fluid drained out, my sinuses dried and I could breathe freely through both nostrils. For the first time in years. What a relief.
I have Nasonex, too, but I’m not very good about using it. It just takes one or two times to accidentally inhale into the back of your throat to make you leary of using it. The Astelin is 1000 times worse if that happens. Apparently, you’re not really supposed to inhale nasal sprays.
I also have a deviated septum so pretty much breathe out of my left one most of the time, because it doesn’t take much to clog up what little use I have of the right one. Perhaps I should get better about using my Nasonex?
Another mono-nostril breather here. Never had my nose broken but suffer from terrible allergies. I also get the occasional nostril switching or both plugged but never get them both working at the same time.
The only time I actually had dual intakes was during basic training. We had to go into a room filled with CS gas (basically the kind of tear gas they use on rioters) and remove our masks. The drill sergeants would scream at us and make us answer questions while our eyes and lungs were burning from the gas. I discovered that as long as I didn’t take deep breaths that the gas didn’t bother me too much plus I was used to my eyes burning from allergies so it wasn’t too much of an irritant.
After a few minutes of this we were let out of the room and the sergeants told us to turn our faces into the wind to help air out our eyes. As soon as I stepped outside my sinuses opened. I swear it felt like Niagara Falls was pouring from my nostrils and my head felt about 5 pounds lighter. I actually looked forward to the next round of training!
When I was in boot camp we went through the same thing. The instructor said the gas was a milder variety and claimed that when he or the others caught a cold, they’d go through a session and it would dry them out far better and longer than any nasal spray ever did.
This was in August so we didn’t have anyone with a cold handy to test the story out.
