Breezy '70s pop/rock/folk songs

Moonlight Feels Right - Starbuck. Marimba solo!

Send In The Clowns, Judy Collins

I’m Not in Love, 10cc (one of my all-time faves)

Telephone Line, Electric Light Orchestra

To me, “breezy” would be happy major-key stuff, but I may be filtering this too much.

In that vein: How about King Harvest’s Dancing in the Moonlight?

Ah, right, lost track of the requirement. How about 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover, Paul Simon?

The plot (yes, it’s a rare song that has a plot) is a bit odd, but the lyrics do a great job describing the scene and moving the story along.

Summary of “Year of the Cat”: A European tourist is taking a bus trip through North Africa. The bus stops at an Arab town where everyone gets out to shop at the local bazaars. The whole scene reminds him of the movie Casablanca, which is why thoughts of Humphrey Bogart and Peter Lorre go through his head.

He meets a beautiful, mysterious girl, and he follows her back to her apartment. They spend hours making love, and when he wakes up, he realizes the tour bus is long gone, and he’s stuck behind in the desert with no money, no ticket, no clean clothes, and no way to get home.

Two songs from 1970.

Mungo Jerry, In The Summertime
The Mixtures, The Pushbike Song

Paul Davis should’ve gotten a mention by now. Start with “I Go Crazy” and “Cool Night”.

Another recommended track is “Fallin’ in Love” by Hamilton, Joe Frank, and Reynolds.

Poco was name-checked, but one of their best songs has not yet been mentioned - “Heart of the Night”.

This one charted nationally, but it’s more of a local hit. Well worth seeking out: “New Orleans Ladies” by LeRoux.

Oooh, and Bob Welch’s “Sentimental Lady” has slipped through the cracks. Also his “Ebony Eyes”.

A few others? Hell Jimmy has made a career out of just this type of songs.

For some modern breeze, try Zooey Deschanel’s She and Him

Wet Willie - Keep on Smilin’

Wet Willie - Street Corner Serenade

War - Summer

Hurricane Smith - Oh Babe, What Would You Say

Mouth & MacNeal - How Do You Do

The Friends Of Distinction - Grazing In The Grass

Hugh Masekela - Grazing In The Grass

Last one’s an instrumental, but I HAD to add both of them. Peanut butter & jelly.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions!

Forever ruined by the Toploader cover that shat all over the radio for what seemed like a year or two around the Millennium.

Orleans Dance With Me, actually anything by them I would think.

Indian Lake by the Cowsills. OK, 1968. Not too far off.

“Burning Bridges” by the Mike Curb Congregation

Much of Dr. Hook’s late-1970s material fits the bill. Start with “A Little Bit More” and “When You’re In Love With a Beautiful Woman”.

Three more songs, all from 1981-82, that have this same “ethic”:

  • “Hearts” by Marty Balin
  • “Sweetheart” by Franke & The Knockouts
  • “I Love You” by Climax Blues Band (really, though, a Derek Holt solo)

Alive ‘N Kickin’ - Tighter, Tighter
The Five Stairsteps - OOOh Child
Friends of Distinction - Love or Let Me Be Lonely

All these songs bring me back to innocent times and make me smile.

Just thought of another:

Too Late to Turn Back Now - Cornelius Brothers and Sister Rose
