Rather than being just another excuse to debate the entire war, for me, the Bremer edicts beg the eternal question, “What are you going to Do about It?”
If the elected representatives of the Iraqi people decide they don’t want all these U.S. trade-protection etc. rules hard-wired into their system, and toss them out in an ungrateful hissy fit of sovereign self-rule - what are we going to do about it?
Traffic regulations…suddenly, it all becomes clear. We’re obviously seeing the opening salvo of Phase Five of Operation It’s-Not-About-The-Oil. As Iraq inevitably fails to move toward anything remotely resembling democratic rule, the Bush Administration will need a fresh fallback position. No doubt in a month we’ll be hearing the Bush people lamenting, “Oh, why does the liberal press continue to distort our position? At no point did anyone in the Administration ever say anything about liberating the Iraqi people, and it is pure partisan malice to suggest otherwise. Our position now, as it has always been, is that we sent troops into Iraq to help police their driving practices.”
Not quite. If it all goes straight to Hell, as it very well might, the line will be “Well, gee, we went in there, liberated the living shit out of 'em, set them on their feet and gave them their allowance money, and then they fucked it all up!..”
