Scary, huh?
He’s not that intellectual. He’s bright, but it just seems smarter because of who he’s surrounded by on this board.
I think the further polarization of America will make it more difficult for people of different political positions to remain civil.
Pol…la…ri…zashun? What means polarazashun?
I mean, shit, I just asked someone if they were arguing if Trump had forfeited the deontological protections of press accuracy, but yeah, I’m more the physical type.
‘Look Ma, I’m using real big boy words!’
That should have been “the conservatives he’s surrounded by on the board”.
It’s not worth my time and well-being to quibble over these things. And that’s what most of your avenues lead to—quibbling over abstractions or minutiae or tu quoques or some other distraction that you will eventually demand a money bet for. You’re basically an online version of the Riddler.
So … plonk
Translation:
“I’m really really mad at you, because I can’t actually refute you, and when I try, you make me look bad. You suck!”

If you had actually read the post you responded to, you would have seen that TB acknowledges that you are bright, but, as he was responding to someone giving you even more props, "His considerable intelligence " was just pointing out that you aren’t some sort of intellectual god.
So, the reaction that you have chosen to take, that of one unfairly maligned, is not really justified.
But, you did in fact reinforce the second point that TB made, in that the polarization makes you take such light criticism as such a deeply personal insult.
I read this: “He’s not that intellectual. He’s bright, but it just seems smarter because of who he’s surrounded by on this board.”
And in your view, my reaction should have been to NOT take this as maligning? Or not take it as unfair maligning?
Tell me: do you believe I have a higher burden to to be fair in my critiques than others?
In other words, would you say you’re chiding me for a reaction that you would ignore if it came from other posters?
Translation:
“I’m really just like that so I better try and deflect attention back at him, like with the ‘I’m rubber, you’re glue’ kids’ thing, only with real big boy words! I suck!”
Quarry.
Jackass.
If one person walks by, and call me a genius, and another person says, he’s not a genius, he’s pretty smart, but he just seems even smarter because of his peers, I don’t know that I would take that as a compliment, but I wouldn’t take it as an insult either.
Really, only someone who only considered unfettered compliments to be a non-insulting description would read TB’s comments as an insult, or someone polarized enough by having a different position that they have difficulties remaining civil.
You have no higher burden for any of your posts than what you choose to take responsibility for. If you wish to be fair in your critiques, that is your choice, if you don’t wish to be, that’s you choice as well. If you feel that the fact that there are posters who do not take the time to understand your positions and motivations, and that justifies you to take a disingenuous attitude towards not just those, but to all your interlocutors, then that choice is yours as well. I will agree that there are those here who asses your motivations incorrectly, but that is due to both the partisan issue mentioned previously, and due to the fact that you don’t like to say what you actually stand for, so people filling in those gaps may not do so as fairly as you like.
So, incorrect? Maybe, depends on the context, we’ll go with often it is not a correct assessment of your positions or motivations.
Unfair, though? I don’t know about that, there are many times you could clear up a misconception easily, but seem to prefer to string along others in a guessing game as to what those motivations are.
As this is in a thread that is actually calling you a peice of shit, I do not think that my gentle criticism would be considered to be chiding, but in any case, I would not have taken TB’s slight criticism that you are not a genius, “that intellectual” to be an insult.
We now pause for a brief interruption of the regularly scheduled shit show.
Bricker, you might enjoy this: STANDARD OF PROOF IN SENATE IMPEACHMENT PROCEEDINGS
I’d say it’s more that his intellect mainly serves a small, self-absorbed bubble, while his intellectual integrity is busily stepping on self-righteous stones laid across the unprincipled pathways of his mind.
Bricker is the John Kasich of the SDMB. Compare him to everyone else in the cesspool of conservatives he is grouped with and he sure does look smart and sane. Damn shame that ruling a pile of shit still means you’re in a pile of shit.
It’s not a huge shock that the both of them value a fucking fetus more than fully formed human beings (and both of them will give you hurt puppy dog eyes when you mention that, even though that’s exactly what their policies exactly do).
As for Shodan he’s just one of the cesspool.
I guess it would depend on your vanity. If you truly believe that you are a genius then I can see someone taking it as an insult.
Context matters of course, and my comments were poking fun at Bricker’s response to “(h)is considerable intelligence” and “intellect.” It could be taken as an indication of his regard for himself.
Honestly, I didn’t intend to malign him, but he is getting huffy about it.
Originally, this was my point, the polarization of American politics has direct bearings on the interactions of this board.
The right wing press has increasingly vilified liberals for years and years now. Finally, the left has gotten tired and is pushing back with the same anger. This external force means that people on this board have less patience for calm discussions or cutting the other some slack.
Polarization fosters the ability to read minds. You can see it on both sides, as well as the inability to see one’s own prejudice. Just as Bricker is absolutely certain that the liberals are attacking that Montana congressman hypocritically, he doesn’t see that his reaction is as equally a knee-jerk.
Of course, there are plenty of asinine liberal comments in that thread as well. The level of discussion is another casualty in this particular war.
God damn right.
You think vilification of the right is a new thing on the SDMB?
Come on, you can’t be that stupid.
Regards,
Shodan
