Brickyard 400: Observations and Questions

Is NASCAR the one that lets people watch from the inner field?

scurries back to doing research since NASCAR is coming to town this week

Yep, though infield camping is usually expensive… and you usually still need to have a seat in the bleachers, even if you do not choose to watch the race from them. Infield viewing/camping is limited by some facilities due to space.

As you’re talking about this weekend, that means Pocono, and they have a fair amount of infield camping. It’s a great wish of mine to rent a BIG camper and stay there for the weekend someday.

See here for Pocono details.

Pocono? Nah, this weekend marks NASCAR’s first visit to Canada in 50 years

That would be the Busch series. They don’t always run at the same tracks on the same weekend. I am looking forward to it though.

A few years ago I saw a short documentary on a family that vacationed in a gravel pit by a freeway intersection in the maritimes, so that they could watch the cars go by all day.

DOH! I assumed you were talking about the Cup series, as that was the series for the Brickyard 400.

Should be fun to see, I’d love to see at least 3 road courses in both series… and one in the last 10 races of the Nextel cup.

I would not mind 3 road courses, but I’m not sure about the chase. Such a large majority of guys have so little experience on them that it would give an unfair advantage to a minority of drivers. Juan Pablo montoya could eaily wipe* the floor with everyone. (were he to make the chase)

OTOH, most of the guys in the hunt are all decent at the road tracks, so perhaps it wouldn’t be as bad as I previously suggested.

I’ll compromise: You get the road course in the chase, if I can get just one dirt track, somehow. :stuck_out_tongue:

*Literally!- Did you SEE the way that guy beat and banged his way around Infineon?

Oh man, how cool would that be? They could charge $500/ticket and sell it out.

Turn California into a dirt track, and you solve both problems! Cali sells out, and we get a dirt track! I’d be all in favor of a real slugfest in Cup cars on dirt. And Kenny Schraeder might have a shot at winning one!

I didn’t know that anyone who lived in Indianapolis was considered a moron with an I.Q. of 80. That’s news to me.

But, if I decided to go to the track topless with my tits airbrushed into a race flag while drinking from a beer hat, I wouldn’t expect anything less. As long as people want to revel in their redneck heritage there will be people making fun of them. That’s the risk they take when they put on their wife beaters and pull their campers on the lot and start slamming beers at 6 a.m.

As for saying it was “fact,” that’s an exaggeration. I am definitely not going out to the track to do research on the topic. I’ve had the unfortunate experience of working in the hospitality field in this city and have dealt with hundreds of race fans. The Brickyard patrons are the cheapest and drunkest out of all three races we host here in Indy. Make of that what you will.

Whoa…I sense some hostility. I never said that everyone from Indy had an I.Q. of 80. Your name, “facts”, and asking me if I was there implied that you went as well.

Last spring in Richmond, I had orange hair, quite a few beads, and various buttons. Ironically, I wore nothing that would indicate being a NASCAR fan. It [tailgating] is a party, much like Mardi Gras, and I dress accordingly sometimes. Other times I wear whatever street clothes I normally would. Depends on my mood that day. Certainly if you want to make fun of my orange hair, then please do so…it is kinda the point. Besides, I entertain myself by making fun of people wearing Crocs in public all the time.

Probably well over half (although I have never taken a pole) of attending fans have had a few too many. However, I have never seen any fights (I’m sure it occurs, but I have not witnessed), and the only arrests being folks selling trinkets without a license.

Cite?

I don’t know if I should feel left out or what. I really don’t have a redneck heritage. I’ve never owned or displayed a rebel flag. My IQ is well over 80. That said, I have been to quite a few NASCAR races. All of the friends that have ever went along to those races are also lacking in “redneck heritage”. Like my first post to this thread said, some of you are painting with a brush that is way too broad.

Oh yeah, I’ve also never seen anyone at a NASCAR race with their tits airbrushed into a race flag. Maybe that’s just my luck? I’ve only seen beer hats on televised NFL games.

I will confess that I have cracked a beer at 6:00am though.

Yeah, I would definitely encourage that type of behaviour!
