Was there ever any doubt, with that joke of a defence? As I said earlier, I think the girls’ families should sue him now for making them go through all that.

Now I’ve got that off my chest, what about Maxine Carr? Even if she’s found innocent of all charges (which she won’t), she’ll be free soon enough. Her life will be hell. She’ll have to leave the country.
What disturbs me is that it was a split jury - the judge had to allow a majority verdict. Who the fuck was taken in by his lies and the frankly intelligence-insulting defense?

Carr, 3 ½ years. Already been in custody for 16 months, five-ish months left to serve (assuming standard discounting).
It’s probable she’ll be out in May next year.
It was only one jury member, but still… maybe they flew someone in from the OJ trial.
The UK allows majority verdicts? If the judge allows it? Could it have been 10 to 2? 7 to 5?
What disturbs me is that he had a whole string of complaints and investigations for underage “relationships” yet no-one was aware of this when he was employed as a school janitor.

It’s at the judge’s discretion; he told the jury he would accept 10 to 2. I don’t believe that a verdict of fewer than 10 in favour has ever been accepted in a murder trial though.
It is not inconceivable that somebody doubted some details of Carr’s involvement, but not Huntley’s. One of the jurors must be a brain donor.

Futile Gesture, not knowing previous convictions or accusations is part of the British legal system.
Read his sentence again: it’s not the jury he was talking about, it’s the vetting to get work in a school.

Should a pattern of arrests but no convictions be held against you when going for jobs? Should a special case be made for working with children? There’s a GD in there if anyone what’s to start one. I’m too hungover and tired to do anything in GD today.
That’s likely to be the big story in the next few days. A spokesman from the school has said that Huntley would never have been given a job if they’d known he had a burglary charge on the police’s books (which he had), let alone the sexual offences stuff.
He gave a false name on his job application, and investigations were only carried out on that name, even though he added his real name on the police statement that all school appointees are required to fill out. The checks were shambolic and there’ll be plenty of finger pointing about who was to blame.
It is difficult to understand how a jury could be in any doubt, now that all the evidence is disclosed (link)
