Speaking on behalf of one American, I tend to do the opposite of what George Mikes suggests. If something is from Scotland or Wales, I’ll call it Scottish or Welsh, but if it’s from England, I’ll call it British, unless it’s in a context where the distinction is important.
So how come Her Brittanic Majesty is almost always referred to as the Queen of England?
Why if it’s from England, call it British?
I see myself as first English and then British.
Oh, and I have a north eastern accent and have been accused of being an Australian.
