British evacuation of Norway, 1940.

Churchill writes in his book The Gathering Storm that a shore based squadron of Hurricanes was evacuated by landing on the aircraft carrier Glorious. Did all Hurricanes have tail hooks?

No, they did not. A skilled pilot could stop a Hurricane pretty quickly.

Thanks.

All Glorious was sunk with the aircraft aboard.

The squadron administrative officer managed to retrieve the Squadron’s petty cash box before sinking. He spent hours floating with it before he was picked up. There had been 200 pounds in it, when he counted it back in England, he realized that about 5 pounds had been lost The Squadron was being disbanded and its personnel sent elsewhere, so he asked the Wing HQ what he should do with it. They said that he should keep it and have a party. He thought this was not right, so sent the amount to the Air Ministry, with an explanation.

They immediately constituted a Board of inquiry to figure out what happened to the 5 pounds abd the pilot was grounded for the entirety of the Battle of Britain, before it was omplete.
