I remember my first visit to London, many years ago, when I was talking to a native and said something like “I have seen some pubs, the state of which would have made a Swedish sanitary inspecor go ballistic and have the place closed immediately”.
His answer was that English sanitary insspectors, too, would react to the some pubs, but a little handout under the table could take care of that.
