Britney Spears' wide throat

Bizarre title, serious question.

An associate today mentioned that she had heard the reason that Britney Spears (apparently) has quite a wide neck/throat is due to so much singing training at an early age, developing her vocal chords.

It sounded rather odd, so I wondered if any professional singers/teachers could comment.

I know professional singers develop their diaphram, but aren’t the vocal chords fairly tiny? Even trained, would they really make a singer’s throat/neck noticeably bigger?

I’m going to avoid the obvious joke here.

Wouldn’t all singers who started at an early age have similarly-sized thorats?

Well so one would think, but perhaps muscles build up differently in different singers.

Fine, then, if no one else will say it.

Britney Spears has a wide throat due to a lot of stretching of it. We’ll let the interpretation of that as an exercise for the reader.

I don’t think it’s been established that she has a wider throat than average. Is he referring to her trachea? How exactly would this be stretched by singing?

Britney’s singing voice happens to be on the lower end of the female range, partly due to a naturally wider throat and probably slightly-longer-than-average vocal cords. Men with deep voices also tend to have wider throats than men with higher voices.

That said, I’ve never noticed anything unusual about Britney’s throat.

Now that is interesting. IIRC, the teachers that sang tenor in the school choir tended fit that, as compared to the bass singers.

It’s not that wide is it?
