While the term “riding” no longer has legal or political significance in the UK, it is still commonly used by people in Yorkshire in an informal sense.

On the MP scandal. Our MP, who was also Home secretary, with overall responsibility for crime policy, counter-terrorism, immigration and passports got caught fiddling her expenses.
Among other things, she designated a house in London owned by her sister as her main residence (apparently she rented a single room there) in order to claim a parliamentary allowance for her house in Redditch as a secondary home. Naturally we voted her out next chance we got.
The riding divisions of Yorkshire have(probably unfairly) become synonymous with various forms of corruption in my mind. Partly due to David Peace.

Note: I am not attempting to suggest these places are more corrupt than elsewhere.
