Brokeback Mountain (OPEN SPOILERS)

And I guarantee that St. Jack of Oxford (ECUSA canonized him!) is going to be quite irritated at the fundamentalists laying exclusive claim to him and his works. One of his biggest efforts was to try to find ways to reach across denominational lines and such.

And, pardon me, but I’m with twickster. I thought some of those jokes were sophomoric when I heard them in 9th grade 45 years ago.

What I kinda hope people will take away from this movie isn’t that someone was wrong, or someone was a victim. Rather, I’d hope people leave the theater feeling pissed off that our society and culture still breeds these tragic love stories. We can pass all the equal rights laws we want. We can even legalize gay marriage. We’re still a long way from it being OK to be a cowboy who happens to love another cowboy.

Okay, this is a major hijack and perhaps we should get a different thread, Poly, but what the hell are you talking about? First of all, who exactly are you calling fundamentalists, and second of all, who has laid “exclusive claim” to him versus simply embracing his work? Why the unprovoked shot here? (And why not in the Narnia thread that I seemed to have killed earlier today? :))

As a Gay man, I have sat through many a film with explicit sex scenes with heteros…now it’s your turn.

Here’s a trick - get over it. I believe consenting heterosexuals can do whatever they want and if it is part of the story, I don’t have a problem seeing it on the screen.

I haven’t seen the film (yet) but have read the story. So have you. So my guess is, if they do the story justice as most reviewers claim, it should be a good film. And making Brokeback Mountain without male to male sex scenes would be like filming Girls Gone Wild with Bea Arthur and Richard Simmons.

BRAIN BLEACH! STAT!

Or not. Being 90% of the population means that we can easily avoid movies with man on man romance.

Is Kate Mara in this?

What has that got to do with someone saying they are going to go the M4M movie, bring tissues, but cover their eyes during the icky boy-boy scenes?

By all means, avoid the movie.

Would that be the same conspiracy that had Passion of the Christ and Dawn of the Dead in theaters at the same time? Which I enjoyed noticing, btw.

And is it cynical of me to wonder about the motives of the 2 male leads? Was it “Here’s a story I want to tell”, or was it “Here’s a movie about gay cowboys. That’ll get me some headlines and notice!”

They’re making it easier for the porno rip off, Bareback Mountin’? Which you KNOW is gonna happen.

Sorry, sorry! At any rate, the more I hear about this movie, the more I want to see it. I don’t know if I’ll go to the theaters (I rarely do), but I’ll probably rent it when it’s out on DVD.

Should I read the book first?

At any rate,

Yeah, i guess they could follow the example of many other movies and shows with gay themes, and present homosexuality with absolutely no sex, just so the heteros don’t feel all icky (i’m looking at you, Will & Grace and Philadelphia).

You might wanna see someone about that.

Hopefully when this movie comes out in Baltimore, it will be at the local independent cinema, so we don’t have to put up with all the morons who groan whenever two men kiss on the big screen.

Of maybe i’ll just see it in San Francisco while i’m out there over the New Year period. I imagine i might be able to find a gay-friendly venue in that fair city.

I thought that was the title until I saw it talked about on the Colbert Report. I thought Colbert was changing the title to paly off his this is a good movie for the kids joke. Then I looked it up. It is Brokeback. I am glad I never discussed this movie with anyone and called it Bareback, I am sure they would think I was making a bad joke.

By the way, do they do it bareback? I mean the horse riding (stop it - dirty mind).

See Art’s comment which I quoted in full in the one you responded to. And it was here in response to his having posted it here.

Brokeback Mountain just won Best Film Of The Year by the LA Film Critics.

Sooner than that. It goes into wider release on Friday, December 16.

The straight dude’s guide to ‘Brokeback’

Word word word.
I love a good gay joke as much as the next politically incorrect person, homosexual or not, but once you’ve seen the movie… wow. The only thing nauseating in the least is the pain these guys feel (and some of the ridiculous gay-bashing comments I’ve read on imdb.com and the like- and you can bet half of these people love girl-on-girl porn), and the only thing that made me feel squeamish was reconciling how damn hot it is with the tragedy of the story.
This may be the best movie I have in theatres seen all year, and I have seen many (other recent favourites include Walk the Line, 40 Year Old Virgin, Palindromes, Jarhead). I am going to promote it like crazy, Arrested Development-style (with more success, hopefully). It will at least be nominated for the following Oscars: cinematography, soundtrack, lead actor (Heath Ledger- Jake was just as good, but his character wasn’t as much of a stretch), supporting actress (Michelle Williams and Anne Hathaway were both excellent).

Anyway, the fanfic girls are going to be allll over this thing and take these two characters to places Proulx could only dream of (let’s be honest- bad dreams, mostly).

Perhaps it is just something that is novel and ununsual and purported by many to be distasteful. Perhaps it is a bit like how my 10 year old son reacts to kissing on television. He shouts “ewww” and wants nothing to do with it, a fairly typical reaction for a child.

After a while, you just kind of get used to it. Really - watch a bunch of “Six Feet Under,” and you’ll just kind of grow accustomed to the kissing and suggestions of gay oral sex.

The Golden Globe nominations have been announced – it’s up for Best Drama, and Heath Ledger, Ang Lee, and Michelle Williams got nominations; it’s also up for screenplay, score, and song.

Well, the WWC (Wyoming Working Cowboys) on my dad’s ranch have opinions ranging from disgust to amusement (most of them amused). The gay themes are part of their equation, but they generally laugh at any hollywood offering about the life of “real cowboys”. BTW, a number of them read the original short story and had approximately the same reaction. None of them said they plan on seeing it.

Well, that may or may not be true…but it’s not like they would admit to wanting to see it considering opinions “ranging from disgust to amusement”…

Would be interesting to know if any of them rent the DVD when it comes out, without telling their homophobic buddies.

My guess is a lot of guys (not only in the WWC) will wait for DVD, or cable broadcasts before they can safely see the film without fearing some dude they know will see them going in, or out of a movie theater showing what they perceive as some fag film.

Just a thought.
