This probably stupid, but is Brooklyn on Long Island?
Yes, it is. So is Queens.
:smack: Hit submit to soon.
I meant to add that, in general, when one speaks of “Long Island,” one is talking of the non-New York City parts, that is, Nassau and Suffolk Counties. But Brooklyn and Queens are, physically, located on Long Island.
Geographically? Yes. But when you say Long Island, you’re talking about Nassau and Suffolk counties. Brooklyn is part of New York City and as such for some reason it doesn’t really count as part of Long Island.
And when you live in Queens, going into the city means going to Manhattan, despite the fact you are in the city politically. Not too mention that postal addresses in Queens refer to your area (Bayside, Astoria, Forest Hills) and never mention Queens itself.
It all seemed so normal when I lived there.
As said above. In terms of physical geography, Long Island constitutes the big island on which nearly all of Kings, Queens, Nassau, and Suffolk Counties are located.
In terms of social geography, “Lawn Guyland” (you have to hear the accent to get the full effect of that) comprises the suburban and exurban towns and villages (and two small cities) lying east of New York City (specifically, of the Borough of Queens).
Yeah. You should have seen how huffy the native Brooklyite got when I casually mentioned that Brooklyn is on Long Island.
