Bubble -- simultaneous movie-DVD release

As someone who doesn’t often go to movies (for various good reasons), I’m all for this.

I couldn’t get the hyperlink thing to work – here’s one of the stories about it, and Soderbergh was interviewed on Fresh Air today.

I preordered the DVD, mostly because I like small movies about everyday people, but also because I really like the idea of simultaneous release and I’d like to see more of it, so I’m supporting it by buying the DVD.

I don’t think the DVD release will keep anyone who was going to see it in a theater from going to the theater. Some people love the theater experience, but others hate it.

The theater chains don’t like it, of course, but they need a jolt. I know a woman who went to Brokeback Mountain. Halfway through the movie, some theater-hoppers came in – with a flashlight – looking for seats, and spent five minutes shining their light around and talking about where to sit. Not to mention the standard crying babies, talkers, and cell phones going off.

Anyone else think it’s a great idea? (Plus, this appears to be a good movie.)

Sounds like a great idea. Here’s the trailer

I think it sounds like a neat movie. So because it’s going to be available via Netflix, I added it to my queue. Why bother to pay up to $10 to see it in a theater when I can incorporate it into my regular home viewing…IN MY PAJAMAS!

I’m why the movie industry hates this idea, obviously!

Me neither. Spirited Away finally played in NH less than 2 weeks before it came out on DVD. We saw it in the theater, then almost immediately bought the DVDs. I wish more good movies worked out that way

I don’t think Spirited Away made it within 100 miles of me, but I would have loved to see that one on a big screen. Finally saw it last week on TCM. Awesome movie.

As for Bubble and other small, independent movies, I think this is the way to go. Theater chain owners don’t need to complain, because the big chains don’t usually open these movies in a lot of theaters anyway, do they? Me buying Bubble isn’t costing them a ticket.
