Buffalo Sports Logos

The Buffalo Bills have a buffalo on the side of their helmet.
The Buffalo Sabres have a buffalo on the front of their jerseys.
Why do these teams have the image of the name of the frickin’ city on their uniforms? What the hell is a “Bill” anyway? The electric bill? dollar bill? duck bill?

If it makes sense to put your city name on your helmet, why not a picture of George Washington on the Redskins’ helmet? A phoenix on the side of the Cardinals’ helmet?

and I don’t understand it either.

I also grew up in Cleveland…huge Browns fan. But if they’re the Browns, why are their helmets orange?

Don’t tell me you’ve never heard of Buffalo Bill? My God, what do they teach these days?

Briefly, Buffalo Bill Cody ran the most famous Wild West Shows, a big spectacle of the 19th century (sort of like a circus with cowboys and indians). One of his best-known acts was Annie Oakley (don’t tell me you’ve never heard of her).

So when Art Wilson decided on a name for the team, he liked the idea of naming it for Buffalo Bill.

As I recall, “Bills” was selected after a contest was held that invited area people to nominate and then vote on a team name. The runner up was “Buffalo Nickels.” The original Buffalo logo actually looked like the buffalo nickel buffalo. The third choice was something that was completely goofy (goofier). (This is from memory – I’ll try to find the actual contest results)

In regard to the Sabres, the real question that us Buffalonians ask ourselves is “Why do the Buffalo Sabres have a GOAT on their jersey?”

I would guess because it’s better than just the letter ‘B’. It gives instant recognition to the city, the same way ‘NY’ or ‘SF’ does. There are lots of cities that begin with ‘B’.

In fact, I have a replica Brooklyn Dodgers baseball hat, and when I wore it, some friends of mine thought it stood for Boston. As if!

Dadgum kids these days, I tell ya…

Oh, and hi, Delphica! Nice to see you!

Well, yeah, I’ve heard of Buffalo Bill.

So, to change my question to fit this theme: Why not call the Redskins the “Washington Irvings?” Because it’s stupid.

And if Buffalo is going to be represented by Buffalo Bill, why not put a picture of him on their helmet? Buffalo Bill throwing a football?
