Buffy Season 9 *SPOILERS*

So, the latest issue of Buffy is out and it seems she is going to have an abortion. Here’s an interview with Joss. An interesting an surprising plot line, one I would not have expected to ever see in Buffy. The backlash should begin very quickly. How bad do you think it will get? Fox News lost their shit when DC wrote Superman giving up his US citizenship. I think their collective heads just might explode over this.

I don’t think FOX will really care, but time will tell. Superman is an American icon, one of the most recognized fictional characters world-wide. Buffy, especially in comic book form, is far, far, far more marginal.

Yes, the Buffy comic is not Superman. However, I think the Fox News/Pro Life/Anti-abortion folks will start yelling and screaming about how comics are geared towards kids (which of course they aren’t) and how the Liberal “pro abortion” agenda is being forced on young people.

It’s a comic from a second-tier publisher, based on a basic cable TV show that ended almost a decade ago. I’d be surprised if anyone outside of Whedon’s fanbase even hears about it.

I mean, it could happen. I never would have guessed that Mass Effect would show up as one of Fox’s pre-fabricated scandals, so it’s possible that they’ll pick up on this, too. But I don’t think it’s terribly likely.

I’ve had it with Whedon. He has good ideas which he promptly strangles. Buffy was such a great idea for a show. An action, comedy, horror with a hot blonde. By season 4 he had turned it into an angst-ridden soap opera. He repeatedly did everything he could to alienate church types. And now this. Given that the country is evenly split on this issue & that Buffy can appeal to almost anyone, he just managed to piss off half his audience, including me. Beyond this article, I’ll never know what else happens in ‘season 9’ since I’ll never buy it.

Jeez, I am so over Joss and how he screws over his female characters while proclaiming himself the champion of all that is female power.

Vampire Slayers are supposed to be some of the most physically powerful and capable people on the face of the planet, but Joss puts them in the hands of an organization that willfully abuses and destroys them, because they know there’s always another one in the pipeline. None of the lessons Buffy learns as a Slayer appear to carry over into her personal life - things like: count on your friends, be prepared, do the research - and either her original character has been completely derailed or Joss intended her to be a feckless, blundering airhead from the beginning.

Grrrrr. Most Buffy fans, myself included, ignore the entire comic book series and wish we could ignore everything after Season 5. Seriously, Joss has fucked up his creation almost as badly as Lucas has Star Wars.

Yeah - the comics just aren’t that famous and the TV show was never meant to be wholesome either.

Given that a lot of women have abortions, I don’t see how Whedon is being so evil to women or anti-Christian to have Buffy have one. What odd reactions.

I don’t know if this is supposed to go in marketplace, but… can I interest anyone in buying my complete Buffy comics set? Eight comics, read but otherwise perfecly good. I include the first Angel comic. That comic picks up right after the last tv episide of Angel ended.

I can’t see how abortion is going to alienate anyone who has survived plot lines about premarital sex, good guy witchcraft, and lesbians.

My biggest gripe with Buffy is her longstanding money issues. She should have been getting at least the healthy stipend Giles got as watcher if not more. The watchers council had plenty of money. And she should have secured away a nice nest egg during her time as head of the slayers.

Even barring that there’s no reason for her to keep falling back on service industry jobs. She has an amazing skill set that would make her plenty of money in security or as a fitness / self defense instructor. She even has experience as a school counselor.

Eh - it’s a fair point, but I think it’s not hard to handwave if you remember that Buffy is very badly damaged. She’s basically been fighting a low-intensity war since before she could drive, seen friends and family die horribly, sexually assaulted, died several times, yanked out of Heaven once, and on and on and on. Morover, that low-intensity conflict will never end - even with the other slayers around, she’ll remain on-call (and a high-profile target) until the day she dies - which will probably come sooner rather than later.

It would be bizarre if Buffy’s life weren’t something of a mess.
