Yeah, we have a cabin not far from here and have been going there for years. I’m from Virginia and we’re both avid fly fishers, outdoorsy.

A frames look cool, and that is about it. Friends have an A frame house. When you are heating the house all of the heat will rise into that big open space up toward the ceiling while you sit there in the cold waiting for the whole room volume to warm. If your sleeping quarters are in a loft up there get used to sleeping in the heat.

On the other hand, if you get a potbelly stove, you’ll be walking around in your underwear and avoiding that loft at all costs.

If your lot is mainly trees make sure you have a 50+ foot perimeter around the house in case of a wildfire. Also keep in mind that trees sometimes fall down, especially in strong winds, so remove any tall, diseased, or old trees that could possibly hit your house if they fell.

Excellent points. And around where I live, there’s yet another reason to remove trees from around your house: mold and mildew will grow in and around your home.

If you are going A frame make sure to have one side of the roof facing south. Do not have trees blocking that side of the big roof section. Use that side of the roof to install free energy options. There are two options. Solar heat panels. Solar electric panels. Solar heat can provide hot water and/or space heating. These can be quite cost effective. Solar electric is more expensive.
The A frame concept provides a large roof area to install one or both options. Just make sure one of these roof areas faces south.
Put on metal roofing. Super insulate. The initial cost pays back fast.
Do not go flat or low slope roof.
