Does a new pc with no operating system yet, require a ps2 keyboard to get everything started?
Got a new PC with apparently no OS installed. Was supposed to have one on the SDD drive but it doesn’t appear to. I have all the disks but have never got one up and running from scratch before. Any advice? Oh, and no I do not have a ps2 keyboard available at this time.
If the hardware is hooked up right and in the BIOS is left on its default, you should be able to just stick the Windows DVD (or a USB stick if you made one correctly) into the slot, boot up, and Windows Installer will take care of the rest for you. If it doesn’t see the DVD/USB stick, check the BIOS settings for boot order and such.
If your BIOS won’t detect the wireless keyboard (MoBo manufacturers sometimes will not include wireless support prior to OS initialization - out of concern for security or “just 'cuz”), you can pick up a cheap-o USB keyboard to get through the install phase.
If, by some ridiculous twist of misfortune, you actually need a PS2 interface there are dongles available. I’m sure I have a few laying around if you need one (I’m sure they’re tough to find these days). My name is GiantRat, and I’m a cable and adapter hoarder… need group hug.
OK, turns out the wireless keyboard is working, what was not working was the usb connector I had used, once I switched it it started working.
So I got into the BIOS screens and found the SDD drive is not being recognized at all, which is where I have been assured the OS is installed and ready to go Checked the cables inside and the SDD power cable was loose, but after reinserting it the BIOS is still not recognizing the drive. It has to be a HW issue at this point and I am anything but a HW guy.
Harder look, turned out to be a loose cable after all, AND a sneaky little switch that turns the drive bay off and on. Eveything up and running now. Thanks everyone.
