Is this a rant? (BBQ Pit) Is it a challenge to discuss the diminished capacities of some of our fellow travelers on this Earth who deny history for arcane reasons? (Great Debates) Or do you have a specific question that got lost in your anger?
If you are asking how people can deny the Holocaust, the answer is generally that various people are frightened by what they perceive as their own powerlessness. They seek to project their inadequacies onto another group that they portray as “all powerful” (thus “justifying” their own “lack” of power). It is easier to convince oneself that a group is bad if you can find earlier (idiotic) people who felt the same way you do and who left “evidence” of the evil ways of your “oppressor”.
One group who has suffered as the result of these social dynamics has been the Jewish people. People, today, who need to blame their own inadequacies on some great “Jewish conspiracy” run into a problem with Hitler’s Final Solution, because if the Jews were really running the world through some sort of conspiracy, they should have been able to stop Hitler. Therefore, one way to deny that the Jews are not powerful is to claim that there was no massacre and that the powerful Jewish conspiracy made up the whole story to increase their power in the world by gaining the sympathy of foolish Americans.
If you’re interested in Holocaust deniers, I recommend a movie called “Mr. Death.” It’s a documentary that came out in the last couple of years about a guy named Leuchter who starts out fixing electric chairs for state prisons and ends up as a well-known Holocaust denier and friend of the white supremacists. One interesting thing about it is that all the evidence anyone in the movie can produce that the Holocaust didn’t happen is really incredibly flimsy. It’s really hard to believe that anyone can deny the Holocaust unless it’s required for some political ideology they subscribe to.
