The hammer and sickle went away when the USSR did, back in 1991. But it’s not like the post-USSR Russian flag (which was also the pre-USSR Russian flag) is well known in the U.S.
Hell, my wife and I made three trips to Russia when we adopted the Firebug eight years ago, but I wouldn’t have been able to recall what the regular Russian flag looked like. I’d have recognized the Presidential standard as being Russian, but not the tricolor, given how many flags look similar to it.
