The thread about the recent snow in Seattle has a link to some driving difficulty in Portland in 2007. Portland drivers stink on ice. (Not what it’s called. Just what I thought it should be called.)
A related video is this one. It’s almost cartoonish.
I figured the person in the first car must have been drunk or asleep, but I’m guessing the road is sloped from the top left and around the corner. ISTM, that some of these drivers, once they managed to get stopped should have just stayed put. After you slide 40 feet at 2 mph with your foot on the brake pedal (and going straight as opposed to sideways) it’s clearly waaay to slippery to attempt moving again. I think, with all those people hanging around a few of them should have gone to the outlying intersections and attempted to direct traffic around the area. I’d be willing to bet, given the circumstances and the danger involved, the police happily would have blocked off the roads, at least until they could get it salted and/or sun came out.
I don’t know when, but is is the Hollywood Frwy North just past Universal Studios and before the Ventura Frwy.
The road here is curved, and the cones tell me there was construction going on. Not a good combo
The video’s actually from the southbound 405 in Van Nuys – wide, straight, no curves or obstructions.
The Hollywood Fwy is where this took place. [Warning: disturbing video in which a motorcycle cop gets killed, although you can’t actually see it happen.]
It’s hard to tell from the video, but it kind of looks like a neighborhood just south of downtown, which is in fact quite hilly - San Francisco-type hilly. Two years ago I was driving through that neighborhood right after it had started snowing, at the point where the snow was just starting to show up on the ground; I headed down one of those hills and almost slid into a tree. Fortunately I was able to get the hell away from the area before it got any more treacherous.
Don’t disregard the panic factor. Once Bad Things start to happen, some people get a certain course of action locked in their minds and will see it through to the end.
