c) how the fuck did she make it look like that?

Well, now I know.
I wear my hair like that often, but I don’t use that weird puffy insert to do it. I just wind it around a thick band, and it’s the same style I’ve worn since I was a kid in ballet class. I have a wicked glare, though. Maybe it’s wrapped too tight…
I don’t mind it so much when it’s at the back of their neck, like they just did up their pony tail, but up on their head like that looks weird to me.
Do you not go outside? Maybe it’s where you live. I see many people wearing buns every day. I notice it, because a]I love people watching and taking mental notes on hair, clothing, jewelry etc and b]I wear my hair up in a bun most days, myself. The style I choose is usually called a ‘cinnabun’ by other long-haired bun wearers, and I hold it up with metal hair sticks or u-shaped pins.
It’s a hairstyle most common in older girls (teens), young women (under 25) - they like messy buns or round top-knots right on top of their head. And older women (60+) with ‘classic’ style and longer hair - they more often choose styles that I do. I also see them worn a fair amount by younger long-haired men, samurai-style.
It looks sort of… Japanese.
My wife puts her hair in a bun at least once a week. She’s 37. She works in an eye doctor’s office and can be running around pulling files, doing pre-testing, fitting glasses, and whatnot. She gets pretty warm because the Doc it old and like to keep the temp up.
The Dr’s wife (self appointed office manager) says that pony tails are not professional enough, so my wife puts it up in a bun when she gets warm. She has this weird contraption that looks like a doughnut. I guess it works the way a sock bun does.
I prefer when her hair is down, but I understand her reasons.
Really? I thought most women with long hair wore buns at least occasionally. It gets the hair up and off you. I don’t have enough hair to do it. My sister wears her hair that way all the time, because it’s past her waist and thick (and she watches a rugrat all the time). She also, appearance-wise anyways, fits right into the matronly librarian look.
If you’re thinking of trying out the samurai topknot, ask yourself, “Am I a samurai?” If the answer is no, consider a different hairstyle. The first step in sucessfully pulling off the samurai topknot is “Be a samurai.” If you’ve not got that step down, there’s not really any point in continuing.
Buns on chicks can look pretty good, though. Especially if they’re rocking the librarian thing. Shh!
I do, especially in my dressier uniform, or on the ranges.
I don’t regularly put my hair up, but I have a close friend with long black hair who is a sheriff’s deputy and she wears her hair in a braided bun for work. Her co-workers also have that same reaction when they see her with her hair down.
I did, and it was cool to watch, but I could hear my hair quietly laughing…
No that was the people sitting behind you in church
My grandma always wore a bun. She was raised Amish so it was just the prudent thing to do with your hair when you had to work on a farm and wear a headcovering. Her hair was down to her butt.
She hurt her shoulder a few years ago and could no longer do the bun, so she got her hair cut very short and permed. Looks great!
The Apostolic Church is very big around here, so I see buns all the time. People I work with, their mothers, kids at school, lots and lots of buns.
This.
I wear a messy bun almost every day. I can’t really do much else with my hair. I sort of pile it all on top of my head and stick pins in. If it needs to look smart I can make it look smooth and chique, but for every day stuff it looks kinda like this.
I see people with buns all the time. Among my friends it’s really common, more so than the pony tail and braid, I think.
I’ve tried but the butter makes’em fall out all the time. That and my hair is waaay too short now…
Some of our older librarians still rock the bun look. Most have short old lady hair, but a few bun it.

That was the idea!
