Buns in Hair- Who Wears Them?

I wear them all the time. Are they supposed to be outdated? Well I suppose some kind of 1800s granny style is but I don’t think mine look like that. There are different ways to do a “bun,” in case you don’t know.

My hair is very very long and very very thick and a ponytail is almost as hot as just leaving it loose.

Edit: for those of you who find it hard to put one up, get rid of the bobby pins. They’re useless. Get yourself some spiral pins and plastic hairpins. A couple each of those and you can do gymnastics in that bun without too much worry of it falling out.

Many years ago, I used to have a little bun-maker hair accessory that I have forgotten the name of. It was made of black velveteen (though they made them in other colors) and had wire sewn inside. It was about 12 or 14" long and about an inch or so wide, and had a hole in the middle where you’d put the ends of your hair.

Then you’d roll the hair (either up or down) and pull the two ends together and twist them in a sort of bow-tie to keep it together. People with extra long or thick hair could separate it and use two of these bun-makers and make a really nice looking double-bun.

Anyone remember the name of this accessory?

I do, on a regular basis. Got butt-length hair that gets into things even in braided form otherwise. A braid that is knotted with the end wrapped around the base of the knot makes a nice bun, when scrunchee’d.

I had one of those! I loved it. I have no idea where it went. Sorry, I don’t remember the name.

Sounds like EZ Bun. Is that it?

Actually, the two-foot long hairs in my food don’t bother me half as much as the 1/2 inch long ones…

Here are a few more examples. Looks a bit like this started as a celebrity thing and possibly traveled down to the hipsters.

I really hate that this phrase is so popular, but then again, I’ve worked with many women who fit the “shlubby matronly librarian” stereotypes.

When I have long hair, I usually twist it around until it looks like this. I will either fasten it with an elastic hair tie, a claw clip, or wood hair stick. My hair is currently not quite long enough to accommodate this style, but when it’s longer, my default “too greasy to wear down, not motivated enough to wash my hair” look is either a French braid or a bun, neither of which are terribly fashion forward but I wouldn’t call it matronly either.

That video sure does look like the same item. I thought it had a different name, something kind of a clever play-on-words that included the word “hair”. (Not Hair-a-gami or Hair-dini, those are similar but different products.)

I always especially liked it because it would curl my hair while I was wearing it. When I took it out at night, I’d shake out long-lasting curls that I couldn’t even equal with hot rollers or a curling iron.

I wear my hair in a bun quite a lot. I have longish hair and pull it back, ponytail it, or bun it at my office job.
