Ok, well… I do believe there are two corrections necessary.
This is an old column, Apr 11, 2003, and I found it when checking out Microsoft’s new Bing search engine.
The column says Bush was approved by his immediate superiors for transfer to an Alabama ANG unit that had no planes, but higher authorities refused to approve the transfer. I have the documents the Bush campaign posted, and there is no approval, just a recommendation for approval. And Bush was not ordered to report to another unit, all they have posted on that is an approval from the receiving unit, but not from the Texas ANG.
IOW, it appears Bush was never approved for any transfer.
As to his 8 months early discharge, there is a DD214 discharging him from duty with the TANG, but a DD214 is not an honorable discharge. It is release from the TANG. I found his resignation from the Air Reserve in Oct 1974, months after he should have been discharged after his 6 year commitment ended. Why it was so late I do not know, but he had to be in the reserve to resign. I guess this part is more an addendum than a correction.
