I’ve been listening to the opening address of the Roberts hearing (aired almost in full and nearly uninterrupted on Fox news, which, though I am by no means a Republican (or even eligible to vote in the U.S.), I am starting to appreciate more and more as a source of news.
But I must say that I am impressed with the hearing, and the opening statements … I get the feeling that for this committee, the most talented, visioned and opiniated senators are chosen, and it is a pleasure to hear them speak.
I heard on NPR that Roberts’ papers from earlier days show that he consistently argues against affirmative action (remember he was the one who wrote the memo on the Plessy case saying it was a bad decision – his former clerks say he’s an ardent segregationist) – also against a right to privacy (don’t understand why the conservatives hate privacy so much) and also against any legal remedies for sexism.
I gotta tell you, he sounds like a stealth racist, sexist, Big Brother loving pig to me.
